Family-owned for over 40 years

It could have been the end of a movie era, but for Willis Johnson, it was just the beginning. In 1976, Willis bought the Tivoli Building in Downers Grove as an investment property. Two years later, the primary tenant, who operated the historic Tivoli Theatre, ran out on him. Faced with no rental income, Willis decided to get into the movie business.

The Tivoli originally opened in 1928 as one of the first theatres in the country that could play pictures, but it had seen better days. Together with his wife, Shirley, Willis began operating the theatre while embarking on a full-scale renovation. Based on the success of the Tivoli, they acquired other historic movie houses and gained a reputation for breathing new life into tired theatres through meticulous restoration along with technology upgrades.

Today, Classic Cinemas has 15 theatres across the Midwest and is run by Willis’s son Chris, who remembers clearing out the Tivoli basement as a kid. Now with both historic restorations and newer locations, we continue to put our guests first and invest in the best movie-going experience. You will get a two hour vacation that is truly extraordinary and always classic. If we ever fall short, we’ll do what it takes to make it right.
