The darkness comes early now that it is November. But the shining lights in the windows are welcoming and the countryside is peaceful. This extraordinary watercolor by Ray Hendershot (1931 - 2019) is entitled "Shining Through." It is 16.25" x 28.5". Ray was a signature member of the American Watercolor Society as well as the National Watercolor Society. He exhibited widely throughout a 60 year career as an artist and received many national awards as well as writing two books: "My World: The Paintings of Ray Hendershot" and "Texture Techniques for Winning Watercolors." Our special exhibition"Country Places, the Hendershot Legacy" is only up for a few more days. If you have not yet been able to visit, please make a plan. You won't want to miss this beautiful show which also features Ray's son Bradley Hendershot. If you are considering a painting, please let us know soon so that we can hold it for you. The exhibition ends November 23.
"The Seasons - Summer," a 17" x 29" watercolor by Ray Hendershot, AWS, NWS (1931 - 2019). It's feeling like Summer today - in November! But cooler days are coming soon. Our beautiful exhibition of the work of Ray and Bradley Hendershot is called "Country Places, the Hendershot Legacy." There are 40 extraordinary paintings to see. The show will be in place until November 23 so make a plan for a visit. If our regular hours do not work for you, you can always request a special time. Just give us a call.
Our "Country Places, the Hendershot Legacy," exhibition continues. Come for a visit this weekend and see this lovely snowy landscape entitled "Early Snow, Montco Park." It is a 19.75" x 29.5" watercolor by Ray Hendershot, AWS, NWS (1931 - 2019). Many of Ray's watercolors feature houses and barns, but this particular piece is all about a walk in the snowy forest. A few browning leaves cling onto the many trees and the boulders peek out of the clinging snow. The painting speaks of solitude and peace - something we all crave. Ray said of this painting, "This is a very peaceful spot in nearby Montgomery County. I often go there to be with nature. It is beautiful regardless of the season." Come take a look and learn more about a man who dedicated his life to touching hearts through art. Beautiful day for a visit!
Happy Halloween from Patricia Hutton Galleries! Hope it's beautifully spooky and filled with excited little monsters and delicious treats! Image: pastel by award winning artist Michael Filipiak.
See our ad for "Country Places, the Hendershot Legacy" in the Autumn issue of American Art Review! Come for a visit and see what everyone is talking about. An extraordinary show! The Pennsylvania countryside with its antique stone houses and barns is truly unique. Their history and beauty is masterfully preserved by the late Ray Hendershot and his son Bradley Hendershot who knew how to capture a sense of time and place. Hope to see you soon. We are open Wednesday - Saturday 11 - 5 and Sunday 12 - 4. And also by appointment.
From our special exhibition "Country Places, the Hendershot Legacy," this is "Back Light," a 19.5" x 29.5" watercolor by Ray Hendershot, AWS, NWS. "This is one of Ray's last paintings, painted in the year of his passing. There is a double meaning to the title of this one: Back Light is both a reference to the lit window in the rear of the house as well as to the backlit nature of the scene due to the setting sun. This scene with stuccoed farmhouse, barn, and outbuildings is classic Ray Hendershot." This is one of my most favorite paintings in the show. Everything about the softness of color, the light, and beauty of detail is simply elegant. The paintings of Ray and his son Bradley will make you fall in love with the beautiful Pennsylvania countryside. The beautiful fall weather will make this weekend perfect for a visit to beautiful Doylestown. Come see the work of these two renowned, award winning artists. Looking forward to your visit!
Most of the paintings in our "Country Places, the Hendershot Legacy" exhibition have exact locations and artist's descriptions as part of the documentation on the reverse. This is one such painting. Thoughts about "Aerial," a 15.5" x 29.25" watercolor by Bradley Hendershot, are carefully recorded.
"This group of buildings is based on the Martin Schenkel property in Oley Township, Berks County, PA." an exact location is then described. The house was build in 1766.
"Since 1983, the entirety of Oley Township has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places due to its nature as a well-preserved representation of historic rural landscape. The painting takes its name from the television antenna next to the right - hand chimney on the house and just visible through the tree branches. This and the smoke emanating from the other chimney are the sole signs of life on this crisp Winter day. The remainder of the farm buildings are battened down for the season as the farm cart in the wagon shed awaits the arrival of Spring." Having the artist's thoughts documented and the location described broadens the appeal of these wonderful paintings even more. You are not only buying a beautiful art object, but also a little piece of history.
Make sure to come for a look and if you like, ask about the histories of these "country places." We will be happy to share their stories with you.
Although Ray Hendershot was best known for his snowy landscapes of antique Pennsylvania houses and barns, he also painted extraordinary still life. "Collectibles," a 16" x 28.75" watercolor is one such painting. Here are objects one might expect to see in one of those PA stone homes: old pottery and Pennsylvania redware. The texture and light on the wood plank wall behind the objects, and the graceful bittersweet branches which were no doubt just picked during a walk in the October sunshine, record a beautiful moment in time. This painting was done in 2002 and is featured in Ray's book "My World" which records his artistic journey and feelings about preserving such moments. Come for a visit to see this and 39 more watercolors and acrylics by Ray and his son Bradley in our special exhibition "Country Places, the Hendershot Legacy." You won't want to miss this wonderful exhibition of simpler times and beautiful moments. .
