Get ready to spring forward as daylight saving time will start this Sunday, 3/13/2022 at 2:00 AM!😁

What can you do to make the shift easier on your body?

AASM recommends the following tips for managing the time change:

🌸Get at least seven hours of sleep (for adults) or eight hours of sleep (for teens) per night before and after the time change.

🌸Gradually adjust your sleep and wake times. Shift your bedtime 15 to 20 minutes earlier each night for a few nights before the time change.

🌸Adjust other daily routines — such as mealtimes — to match your new schedule prior to the time change.

🌸Set your clocks ahead one hour on Saturday evening, March 13, and go to bed at your normal bedtime.

🌸Head outside for some sunlight on Sunday morning. The bright light will help set your body clock, which regulates the timing of sleep and alertness.

🌸Get plenty of sleep on Sunday night to ensure you’re rested and ready for the week ahead.

For non-Kaiser members, you can get it there starting at 5:30 pm Monday through Friday. They take walk-ins. Just bring covid vaccination card and a valid ID.

Very good information for all from Kaiser Permanente about the evolving COVID-19 pandemic and the newest variant, Omicron.

There are important, new developments to share along with critical reminders about how to protect yourself and your loved ones as the infection rates rise.

COVID-19 and flu vaccinations are a must to protect your health
First and foremost, being fully COVID-19 vaccinated and receiving a booster (if eligible) is the key to preventing severe illness and hospitalization.

Second, it is flu season – and the flu shot is critical to prevent the double pandemic of flu and COVID-19.
Getting your COVID-19 and flu vaccinations is the most important thing you can do to protect yourself and your loved ones during this winter season.

If you or a loved one haven’t received your COVID vaccination series yet or annual flu shot, you can go to kp.org to make an appointment at one of our facilities.

Also, you may choose to be vaccinated at an external licensed, independent facility, such as CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, or other retail locations and private labs.

Remember, if you or someone you care for feels sick, we want you to connect with us for medical advice and care. Do not delay your care.

New treatments available soon
While the number of Omicron variant infections continues to climb at a dramatic pace, several new COVID-19 treatments have recently received an Emergency Use Authorization from the FDA and are scheduled to be available for eligible patients in the very near future. It’s important to note that distribution of these drugs is managed by the Department of Public Health at the county level, and supplies are currently severely limited. We hope to see a rapid increase in availability in the coming weeks to months. Below is what you need to know about these drugs today.

Treatment for active infections
There are now limited supplies of two medications designed to fight early, active infections:

Paxlovid
This medication is a combination of two protease inhibitors that help stop COVID-19 infections from getting worse. Protease inhibitors are a well-established, known treatment against viral infections, so we are very familiar with the potential risks and side effects, which in this case, are minimal. In short supply and managed by the Department of Public Health, Paxlovid is not to be taken as a result of exposure, but it is designed for patients at high risk of severe infection and within the first five days of the appearance of symptoms. This is an oral medication prescribed and taken at home twice a day for five days. Paxlovid is thought to work against the Omicron variant, but does have a number of serious drug interactions, including some medications used for high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, and other significant medical conditions. This means that before taking this medication, each patient must be carefully evaluated by their care team for safety of use.

Molnupiravir
This medication stops infection by limiting the COVID-19 virus’ ability to reproduce. This is a new type of medication and the long-term risks are unknown. As such, we will consider use in extremely limited circumstances, avoiding use in adults who are planning to start a family in the near future, as well as those who are pregnant.

Preventive Treatment

Patients with extremely weakened immune systems, like those currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment, may be eligible—supplies permitting—to receive injections of Evusheld. Delivered by two injections every six months, this medication is believed to work against the Omicron variant. We are in the process of identifying and reaching out to eligible patients to determine if they are interested in receiving this treatment.

Wonderful tips for caregivers from Alzheimer’s LA

The holiday season is a wonderful time of year, though it can be very stressful & emotional for Alzheimer's family caregivers. Individuals with Alzheimer's cannot participate in the holiday preparations & celebrations like they did years ago. By simplifying & minimizing the stress, you & your loved one can still enjoy the holidays together.

Re-create holiday traditions & decorations your loved one was familiar with from years ago. Include music, foods & religious or ethnic customs from their past.

Too much stimulation can cause agitation. Limit background noise (including music) & keep decorations in the home simple. Keep their normal routine as much as possible.

Keep them safe! Don't use decorations that are fragile or easily breakable, as well as decorations that look like food to prevent potential choking. Lit candles can be a fire hazard.

Simplify holiday activities to accommodate your loved one’s abilities. Engage in easy activities like baking cookies, making simple decorations, watching old holiday movies, & singing holiday favorites.

Expect the unexpected and go with the flow. Don’t be upset if your loved one says the pledge of allegiance or sings Happy Birthday instead of saying grace. Don’t correct them, join them!

With Covid-19 risks & staying safer at home being a priority, communicate in advance with family & friends to clarify expectations. Schedule phone or zoom calls with those you want to connect with but can’t meet in-person. If you haven’t seen them in a while, update them in advance about your loved one’s condition & changes.

If your loved one is in an Assisted Living Facility or nursing home, you may not be able to visit safely, consider additional phone calls during this time. You may also check with the facility & see if there are other virtual ways you may communicate with.

Ask for help or support. Ask for meal delivery & gift certificates for respite as presents. Attend virtual support group to talk to other caregivers. They will understand the stress and emotions you are dealing with during the holidays and offer support.
