The video clip of the 2023 NBC All-Star Teacher award presented to Erik Berteleson of Wells Middle School has been widely shared. OneDublin.org would like to send a hearty congratulations to Erik and Roadrunners everywhere that have had the "Mr. B. experience." For those unfamiliar with Bert, we wanted to dip into the OD archives and to expand the prism. The lessons he has taught migrate far beyond the Wells band room - from gaining a new appreciation for music and to respecting accountability to fellow members.
Mr. Bertelson was recognized as the Dublin Citizen of the Year for 2014 (pictured here with then Councilmember Don Biddle). While he led the Roadrunner Band & Guard countless times down Main Street in Disneyland over decades, Erik had the distinction of the very first band leader to march his crew through California Adventure Park.
Above all, he is an uncommonly decent human being. Thus, it is not surprising that scores of former students continue to support the Wells music program and cite him as being an instrumentally positive force during their middle school years. Go Bert and Wells!

The Alameda County Fair is now in its second week of operation and it continues to provide something for everyone. One of the annual traditions is located in Building R in the Blue Zone. The exhibit is called "Inside our Schools" where students are encouraged to display artwork employing multiple media. This year, DUSD's Murray Elementary, Wells Middle and Dublin High students had their works featured. Some of the items were recognized with various distinctions. Of particular note was the textile art under the guidance of DHS Consumer & Family Studies teacher, Nichole Slavec. WMS Photography teacher Karey Ronnow and her students continue to be prolific in their participation and recognitions. While at the Fair, catch a respite from the heat and enjoy all of the student art! The display runs through July 9th.

"Cooking is the art of adjustment." - Jacques Pepin. As we await the arrival of a second comprehensive high school, one must not forget the literal rebirth of Dublin High School that commenced about 15 years ago - thanks in great part to funds provided by Measure C. The physical improvements were obvious highlighted by the Sports Complex, Performing Arts Center and the Student Union. However, DHS would not be what it is today without its leadership, staff and expanded programs. OneDublin.org would like to recognize and thank Jackie Lawson for developing the Culinary Arts option into a signature pillar at Dublin High. She exposed hundreds of students to the joys of cooking and positively altered the academic/career arcs of countless students. Congratulations of your richly earned retirement, Ms. Lawson!

Opportunity for Dublin Unified School District 5th-12th grade students and teachers with EXPLR (a new education streaming service from Kari Byron and Jenny Buccos):
Want to be featured in an https://explr-media.com series? Here's your chance!
For EXPLR's new series Everyday Science Stuff, We're looking for middle/high schoolers to record a (1 min or less) video on a phone/ computer where they respond to the question, "What is plastic?" We're looking to get responses that range less scientific to kids who can really break it down on a molecular level.
Some ideas we would expect:
- The word "plastic" really just means something that is bendable and easily shaped.
- What we call plastic is actually a polymer.
- There are naturally occurring polymers, like cellulose found in plant cells
- Then there are man-made polymers that make up the plastic we know today.
IMPORTANT:
1. Students should hold the camera horizontally (rather than straight up and down) and check their settings to see if there is a 24 frames per second option they can choose from. Many phones already have this as the preset, but if someone can help them check, that'd be the best.
2. Once the video has been recorded, they can either be emailed to [email protected] or DM me.
3. Parents/ guardians of the child should sign release forms (DM me)
4. Submit by Tuesday 10/12 or sooner if possible.
Please forward widely (ASAP due to the tight deadline) to all the middle/ high school parents, teachers and youth-serving organizations you know!
If I tagged you, I'd appreciate your help in getting this out. We'd love students from around the world!
