Today is Great Give Day 2023 and here's a little message from my heart:

In 2013 someone very closed to me was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.

When I think about my life and its series of altering events, this has had the largest effect on me as a person. Seeing someone you love, go through what they can potentially go through during moments of crisis to recovery and back to crisis again, is earth shattering.

I remember sitting on the floor outside of the inpatient room, crying and wondering what the future looked it. So many unknowns. So heartbreaking. So much sadness. There was no joy. Only questions.

About a week later, as I was looking for support for myself, I did a google search for schizophrenia support groups and found NAMI Dubuque

When I attended my first family support group, my heart changed. There were people like me. Shared experiences. I took our education class and then joined the board. I was sold on their mission. My heart hasn't been the same since and now I am our first CEO, 10 years later.

This is part of my story and I share it a lot and within our NAMI family, there are many like it.

Today is the day!

What started last May as a rework of our strategic plan and the official "go-time" from last July is now the opening of our new mental health program center. Here's to those 100 hour work weeks and all that we have accomplished in about nine months.

My handsome traveling little babe. He's been all over the United States lately (Kentucky, Chicago, Des Moines, Tulsa) and now he joined me in Clear Lake last night after I wrapped on set. Thanks to for keeping it real the past week. Time for some eggs & bacon and to make our way back to Dubuque. I have a car full of makeup, hairspray, pajama pants, snacks, pillows & blankets. Happy hearts.
