CEHSP is hosting a talk with Ronja Wiedemann: "From Germany to Duluth: Researching Nature-Based Programs for Children," on Monday, November 11 at the Kathryn A. Martin Library in the Rotunda from 3:30-4:30 p.m.
Ronja is a short-term scholar from Scheidegg, Germany. She is studying early childhood studies at institutions in Germany (PH Weingarten) and Switzerland (PH St. Gallen) and is in Duluth for 3 months to complete a research internship with Elizabeth Boileau, assistant professor in the Department of Applied Human Sciences.
Ronja will share a bit about her background and experiences working in a forest school in Germany and her interest in nature-based education. She will also highlight some of the research she has been involved in and experiences she has had in Duluth such as volunteering and visiting nature preschools. Ultimately Ronja's time in Duluth will help her shape her master's thesis project and increase her research skills. She will describe how this experience connects to her passion for connecting children to nature.
All are welcome at the event. Light refreshments will be served.
Here's some relevant UMD research for election day. Harper Miller is a psychology student who works with Assistant Professor John Blanchar in UMD's Social and Political Psychology Lab. They're working on a project related to abortion policy and ideological migration. https://cehsp.d.umn.edu/articles/harper-miller
"We’re interested in understanding what impact, if any, abortion and state abortion policies will have on where people decide to live in the coming years," she says.

She chose UMD for these programs and says they have given her a "...broad range of perspectives, insights, experiences, and opportunities for my future endeavors that keep me inspired as well as motivated to pursue my career path in public health and psychology and keep my community safe & healthy!
What has been her most meaningful experience at UMD? “Probably my volunteer experience for class with Dr. Tornabene! I was reminded of how important it is to give back and how much small donations and/ or actions matter to someone or something!”

This fall, students in the physical education teacher education (PETE) program have had an awesome hands-on learning opportunity to work with local kids right on campus each week.
As part of Assistant Professor Kahyun Nam’s “Adapted Physical Education” (PETE 3400) course, future PE teachers welcome students with disabilities to UMD and work closely with them, providing adapted activities and one-on-one teaching.
As you can see from the smiles, everyone involved has a lot of fun!

“It’s difficult to see those who have just left their homes,” she says, “but it’s nice to be able to provide a place where they can be safe, and it feels good that I’m helping provide that.”

Meet Meridith, a graduate student in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders! https://cehsp.d.umn.edu/articles/meridith-grob
She likes all the hands-on experiences the CSD program offers, such as working in the on-campus Robert F. Pierce Clinic. She also appreciates "how personable and welcoming the clinical supervisors and professors are in our program."
Meridith chose UMD for its location. “There are so many fun small towns nearby to visit for a weekend or day trip, and there are so many outdoor activities to do nearby," she says.

CEHSP students like to make a difference in the community! The PETE (physical education teacher education) Club recently went door to door, dropping off grocery bags on the front porch of each home in a designated neighborhood to collect food donations for Champ's Cupboard.
One week later the group went to each front porch to collect the donations. The outcome was beyond expectations--thanks to the generous community!

In the last weekend of September, eight UMD international students had an experience they won’t soon forget. Associate Professor Mark Zmudy took them camping at Boulder Lake!
Most of the students, who are all associated with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI), had never camped in a tent. None had been canoeing or gone fishing before.
Jeremy Wilson, assistant director of the American Indian Learning Resource Center, joined the group to fish and share a meal. He performed a pipe and to***co prayer ceremony.
Howard Zmudy (Mark’s dad) brought supper out for the group to enjoy.
The group also took a night hike and played games like Bat and Moth (similar to Marco Polo), camouflage hide and seek, and did solo walks in the dark forest. They also had a campfire with s'mores and games.

Meet Anthony Banks, a new assistant professor in the Department of Social Work!
cehsp.d.umn.edu/articles/anthony-banks
Why did he choose to come to UMD?
"I chose to migrate to UMD and the greater Duluth area because I was really drawn to the sense of community among faculty and staff that work in the social work department. We've also met that same support and inclusivity in Duluth, not just at the university. Everyone has been so supportive, and that's exactly what I was looking for while on the job market.
I was also looking for a social work department that already had an MSW program, because I'm really passionate about clinical practice. I used to practice in Missouri where we come from, so getting students engaged and excited about clinical work is something I'm also really passionate about."
