Throughout Minnesota we are experiencing an unprecedented shift in the age of our population, with studies showing that by the year 2030 1 in 5 Minnesotans will be older than age 65. Many older adults and people with disabilities--especially those in rural areas--rely upon volunteer drivers to get to important medical appointments, grocery stores, and community or family social functions. In addition, there is a higher percentage of people with disabilities in rural counties, and lower median household incomes, which means that some families only have one vehicle or none at all.

But you can make a difference as a volunteer driver! Several transportation agencies in our region offer volunteer driver programs and are in desperate need for volunteers to fill the role. In addition to providing a safe ride, these volunteers provide important social interaction and have an important role in addressing social isolation by helping riders stay engaged in their community. Most volunteer driver programs offer a modest expense reimbursement; if you are 55 or older you can qualify for additional reimbursement through RSVP (Retired Senior and Volunteer Program).
