He, We and the Beast. Mixed Media on Paper 15.5” x 24”
Had hopes for this painting to be in Stirling Gallery for Christmas show, but alas nephew’s death, mother’s airlift, and ICU hospitalization and then my own recent health challenges may prevent entrance, but the words of an art photographer and an art framer blessed me more than each fella will ever know. Be kind to one another this holiday season. Remember always, “Courageous suffering begets fierce joy.”

Play vs experiment vs abstract. Mmm. I “experiment.” Must be my science and medical background. “Play” is a difficult concept for me. My childhood is stamped with competition during play. I had five older brothers. Haha. And as a child in pre-air conditioning Florida, the Cold War truly informed the era. “Experiment” is so less competitive for me.My brain injury and the necessity of note-taking has a fun, scientific-method rhythm. Also, Golden Artist Color techs have graciously completed some of my experiments for me and it does validate me and tickles the mind that is just beyond my reach. Brain injury is unique to each person. Painting is absolutely necessary in rehab. After CVP 2020, I came to suspect it has to do with differences, the infinite choices and one’s ultimate responsibility for each piece. My Walter Reed Warriors often returned to Ward 57 from painting in Ooccupational Therapy, animated and laughing. Trained Warriors have to make split second, life-changing decisions while deployed. To sit languishing in a hospital bed, not making decisions, must have been so difficult. After my second brain injury I committed to doing their rehab and it saved my life. Music, map work and painting. I am also grateful that I am ultimately responsible for what unfolds on the substrate (canvas, board, aluminum, wall). Confidence, responsibility and choices are often taken away from the ill, injured and marginalized. I often comment, “Thank you,” when each of you share a post. Because I truly am grateful for your efforts and hope in some way to instill gratitude in all of you, even when a painting challenges, frustrates and disappoints. Each mark, stroke and thought is a gift regardless of semantics,—play, experiment, abstract. Blessings and peace to each of you from a very grateful viewer.

A lifelong art collector, I have always appreciated artists and unique art practices. While living in DC area I was fortunate to take drawing classes at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Virginia.Years later, following a series of tragic events, my medical career and life as adventurer and sportswoman came to an end. I immediately began to pull out maps, listen to never-heard music, and put brushes to paper and canvas. Having served at Walter Reed National Medical Center, I knew my Wounded Warrior patients with brain injuries utilized these therapeutic strategies to improve neuro plasticity. I did the same and over time, not only did my daily life improve, but an art practice developed and thrived. I coordinated ergonomic work stations, practices and techniques to accommodate my challenges. Today, many of my expressive paintings in acrylic and mix media depict bold, figurative elements which mirror my motto, “Courageous suffering begets fierce joy.”
