While still recuperating from my hell flu, I logged another successful presentation on FEAR with a hand’s on tool to help the participants move through it.

It was a little disconcerting on the Microsoft Teams platform because of some bizarre tech issue I couldn’t see myself for the entire presentation and could only see a couple of the 200+ participants. It felt a little like talking into a void. At times like these I am super grateful for my theatre 🎭 training. I made a joke that it didn’t matter since I already know what I look like 🤣

Good news is the presentation was VERY well received and since I’ve gotten a tremendous turnout with this group the two times I’ve spoken we may make it into a quarterly occurrence. 🙌

Last week I flew to Nashville to record a song. It was a song I had co-written on a business retreat back in May of this year with several other entrepreneurs who are also in their “Second Act” of life and business.

It was a wonderful collaborative experience and I'm so glad I went and got to have that experience.

“Second Act” is the name of the song.

The host of the business retreat decided to have the song professionally recorded. She sent the co-writers the recording this past summer.

I was perplexed. I didn’t recognize the song. And I helped to write it.

What was missing?

One word: SOUL.

The song had lost it's soul. We wrote the lyrics with passion and pride, infused with fun, from the seat of each of our lived experiences.

A twenty three year old had covered the vocals. She had a beautiful voice, however, she lacked the depth and the lived experience to capture the essence, the grit and the SOUL of the song.

It sounded pretty, but forgettable.

And I wasn’t having it.

I was determined to do our song justice.

So last week I went to lay down some vocals myself. I asked one of my Besties Veronika Santha Walker to join me so we could make a day of it and make it AN EVENT. My motto in life to always “have a great time no matter what” and this was no exception.

She drove in from Birmingham. I flew in from Tampa.

I was in the hotel room when she arrived, doing some warm up vocals I had hastily found on You Tube when I landed.

When she walked in, she exclaimed “I wanna hear this song!”

It occured to me for the first time that I had never even sung the whole song from start to finish.

“Did you practice?” She asked.

I choked.

“Well, I had a guest in town that I was entertaining and couldn’t really get away…” I trailed off because I realized how lame my yammering excuses sounded, especially to me.

Because the truth is, I typically LIVE TO PRACTICE!

Seriously. As a theatre actress, I know that for every minute you’re on stage, approximately an hour of practice has taken place.

My favorite question to illustrate my passion for practice to my sales coaching clients is” “How do you get to Carnegie Hall?”

(The answer, in case you hadn’t heard this one, is “YOU PRACTICE.” )

But in this case I failed to heed my own creed.

Which led me to ponder the question: WHY had I avoided PRACTICING the song?

I traced it back to my self talk.

“You’re not a great singer.”

“You’re just doing this to do this. No one’s gonna listen and no one’s gonna care. “

Just go wing it. Why bother?”

OH, How INTERESTING!!

And it occurred to me that my behavior is just like that of the spiritual entrepreneurs I meet who have a great product and do amazing work, but are running away from the word “Sales” and won’t seek the coaching they so desperately need to get PRACTICE at the very thing that is critical to making their business a success.

Which just happens to be sales.

Without sales, there is no business.

Don’t be anyone’s fool about that. I’ve recently seen a few prominent business coaches preach that working on sales skills is a “waste of time” WHUTTT? As a seasoned sales professional, I beg to differ.

Sales is a SKILL. A skill which will keep you highly employable and successful when it comes to having your own business. And how do we improve our skills? That’s right.

WE F*CKING PRACTICE.

I got a lot of clarity in Nashville. Since 2017, when I started my coaching business, I’ve become my own expert on moving through FEAR. And practicing this song was yet another thing that I was running from and avoiding because of my own fear, scritch and negative self talk.

My ego had successfully talked me out of making the most of this opportunity that I had created for myself, to go and really ace singing this song.

So I started to practice. I sang the song three times in the hotel room, and four or five more times in the Uber on the way to do the recording. (The Uber driver was cute. When we got out of the car he said enthusiastically “I can’t wait to hear that song on the RADIO!”)

As soon as we started recording I got deep into self-judgement. I thought I sounded terrible. Like I was cracking all over the place and singing a Z flat. (Heh, heh. No such note but I think I’m funny)

I looked up at Veronica after stopping the song abruptly.

“It’s not as bad as you think” she said. “Start over.”

Like the Beetles, I get by with a little help from my friends. 😉

I listened back to some of the takes she recorded and had to agree. It wasn’t as bad I thought. In fact, it wasn’t bad at all.

Today, I got the finished song, set to music. Let’s just say I was pleasantly surprised. And tearfully proud.

And, happy as I am, I can’t help but to imagine how much better it could have been with just a little more practice…
