This photo is worth more words beneath the soil 🪱🌿

We combined sorghum-Sudan grass, iron and clay cow peas and buckwheat from after listening to the about needing to add biomass to our sandy soil!

This corner of our property grows no pasture under this large privet bush (the size of a tree) and has nothing but sandy, easily drained soil. I’m so excited to see flourishing plants under this tree to help heal our soil.

Thankful for the resources available at our fingertips!

What do we do with carrots that don’t get sold?

We can them of course!

These will be a simple and easy addition to any meal over the next six months!

The garden in August 🌾

What is doing well:
Corn (2nd planting)
Watermelons
Peppers
Squash
Herbs
Pumpkins
Carrots

What’s struggling:
Tomatoes
Zucchini
Popcorn
Kale

We have struggled so much this year but also had so much abundance at the same time. We have enough food to feed many families besides our own. We have learned so many lessons this year that will shape and change how we do things next season.

There is always a lesson to learn, what lesson are you learning?

Earlier this year, I was voted in as Secretary for the Gulf Coast Sheep Breeders Association.

An honor and a duty to help preserve this breed of hardy, multipurpose sheep. I look forward to my time in the position to help our Board of Directors in their task to educate and offer resources. Taking our sheep to events helps get the conversation started and I’m excited to say I will be applying for a Premier1 Grant from 🐑 Fingers crossed!

I need your help!

What events next year would you love to see me at?! As we get closer to the end of the year, it is time to take the opportunity to find events!

We have the ability to travel with stock and dogs up to 500 miles and the ability to go with dogs anywhere.

Where would you like to see us?!

Too fun not to share 💙

and his boys Ben & Pine

Josh has fallen out of love a bit from being behind the camera - so I have enjoyed the opportunity to put him in front of it to capture memories he will cherish.

We said goodbye to two good dogs this year - making us cherish our time more with the ones still with us.

We are adding another girl to the pack in just a few weeks, we are both excited and anxious to have ten dogs in the house again. They sure do make our lives complete.

Chopper is looking so good these days!

He’s our surviving lamb from twins born back in March. Zydivey looks like she has been bred back so we may be expecting another lamb later this year.

Gulf Coast Native sheep have been such a good addition to our homestead and I’m so glad they’re here!

Do you have sheep or are you interested in having sheep some day?

We had 12 kids in our local NC Cooperative Extension 4-H Farm to Fork camp come for a visit this morning!

We were able to share about our livestock and our garden and the kids harvested some produce to take back and learn to cook with.

They asked so many good questions and we were able to explain why we do everything a little differently from conventional practices. We shared what tools we use in the garden and how our livestock play an important role in the cycles we have.

Their relationship makes it all worth it 🖤

The late nights, the early mornings, the time away from the homestead. For those of you who don’t know, Josh is the stay at home parent while I still work off the homestead. We spent the first four months as parents enjoying every moment with our girl. I’ve been back to work since and as much as I would love to come home, we aren’t financially there yet.

I can leave for working knowing that these two will have fun and enjoy each other’s company. That she will be raised in the way we hope, and fed wholesome, real food. He’s the best father I could ask for and I’m so thankful for these two beings in my life.

Just another day at at 🐾

Beacon will meet his new family in just over one week! Until then, he’ll still get plenty of socializing and we will start working on some basic obedience.

What sort of beginner training would you like to see demonstrated?

The first to leave 💛

Macie Raye is headed to the perfect farm! She’ll join her older brother Moose in Virginia with 🍯

We are always so honored when families decided to get a second puppy from us. Over the past 6 years, we have had 10 families get a second Australian Shepherd from us. We always say 2 is easier than one once the first one is fully trained.

We can’t wait to follow along with Macie’s adventures!

Today marks 6 years of marriage for us!

We’ve had a few lifetimes in the past 6 years, many roadblocks and difficulties which tested us individually as well as together. We have overcome my sickness, starting our homestead, welcoming our daughter into the world and so much more!

Here’s to many more years together!

About Us

Nestled just a few miles from Interstate 95, the homestead looks like any other ranch-style brick house. The 1.24 acres the house sits on does not look like any other as we have turned the flat sandy soil into grazing ground for our pastured, non-GMO meat birds. Along with our meat birds, we also raise Black Australorp, Rhode Island Red & Whiting True Greens, also pastured, non-GMO fed, for only the best brown and green eggs.

As our homestead grows, we will be adding quail, duck, turkey, and in 2021, PIGS! We are working on broken soil that has been farmed for generations and can only hope that our restorative farming puts some life back into it.

Why the name you ask? Well, we raise Australian Shepherds! A small venture we started almost 3 years ago, we are awaiting our next breeding season for our second litter of puppies!
