Studio &
A progressive, artistic, evolving idea shared by five artists utilizing a common space with one passion in mind: Art.
It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of our dear friend Rosie Carter.
Rosie was one of our first represented artists at &, and she went on to be a partner here as well. Her creations and her driving innovation are still very much a part of the fabric of Studio &, and always will be. We still do things around here that were completely Rosie’s doing. And as we look around and think about Rosie’s legacy, we see that so clearly in her wake all over the four corners. Rosie was a force. She made things better! She had a graceful strength about her that affected everyone she was around. She gathered people together and did good, she had good ideas, and she got things done! Rosie was the impetus to so much creation, innovation, betterment... not only in the art community but the community at large. The difference she made in her time on this plane can not be understated.
She was an amazing artist, absolutely, she was a dear and loving friend, for sure, but the behind the scenes driver is what we’ll remember most. we’ll miss that quiet joke under her breath and the laughter. Most of all we’ll miss the light.
The Studio & family sends all our Love and our deepest condolences to Dave, her family, and all her beloved friends.
Thank you, Rosie. We Love you.

A bit about the work from Leesa:
Life-long topophilia - from Greek topos ‘place’ and philia ‘ love of’ - defines the desire to immerse myself in the landscape and to translate the experience onto paper and into cloth. My work is a continuum of drawing on both surfaces while employing both hand and mechanical tools.
The physical foundation of the textile drawings began with a selection of repurposed silk, dyed over the course of the past twenty-five years. Much of the cloth - primarily white kimono lining - was gifted to me by neighbors while living in Japan. Prior to dyeing with plant materials, various methods of shibori resist were incorporated to create pattern or texture. Each remnant contains the patina of the benefactor as well as the memory of place where the plants were foraged.
Several things caught me by surprise while preparing for this exhibition. The preciousness once held for the cloth dissipated and was replaced with a relaxed irreverence for its use. An attempt to work more abstractly came with a realization that I actually love detail, and therefore, it must be honored. This body of work is a conversational diary of the trails; not a broad view but a close-up of the beauty within each place. Thanks to Studio & for the invitation, which has been a catalyst to exit the comfort zone.
The Continuum show will be up through October 26. Studio & will host an artist talk on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 2pm. Please join us

A bit about the work from Louise:
I love the title of this show, Continuum, because it describes my artistic journey. As a kid and teenager, I always had access to art supplies and loved drawing, painting, and creating stories in pictures and words. I can’t remember not wanting to be an artist. In college, as an art major, I explored all the media available to me. As a teacher, first as an art teacher at the high school level, and later as a workshop instructor in design and calligraphy venues around the country, I shared my skills and love of art with students. As a graphic designer and commercial greeting card designer, I used my illustrations, lettering and painting to meet the needs of my clients.
Now, at this point in my life, I follow the muse, harnessing all my acquired skills to create my work….always being open to new media and ideas. I have always been an outdoor person–hiking, biking, skiing, kayaking, swimming–and my art most typically relates to time spent in the natural world. The play of light on a canyon wall, the shapes and colors of rocks and water, trees through the seasons, flora and fauna, sun on snow……all these and more inform my subject matter. I often carry a sketchbook on my wanderings and my drawings
in the field frequently lead to my studio art.
My large drawing is an experiment in cutting up printing plates, laying them on the press to form a pattern, and later adding drawing to the piece. The rest of the pieces are the result of a recent interest in adding stitching to my paintings. They relate in media rather than subject matter, and have been a grand experiment. In the spirit of continuum, I hope to see how stitching may find its way into my future works: painting, printmaking, lettering, and in my handmade books. The explorations continue!
The Continuum show will be up through October 26. Studio & will host an artist talk on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 2pm. Please join us.
New cyanotype work from Ilze Aviks as part of the Continuum exhibit throughout this week at Studio &. We have been so happy to have a steady flow of visitors this week spending time with the show. Here is hoping you can make some time to come by the gallery and see this wonderful exhibit.
A bit about the work from Ilze:
Art is a way of being and a way of looking.
I love the documentary quality of images captured when something in the world makes itself seen. My images are derived from negatives made from my own photographs taken on a rudimentary iPhone. I don’t want tricks, or effects, just authenticity. The viewer may “recognize” the image, yet the cyanotype blue makes the image magical and regal.
Working with the sun, never artificial light, is a process that can be unyielding and also a process to be respected. With the sun as a partner, the quirkiness of our encounters with images and experiences come to life.
All hail to Anna Atkins, who, in 1843 published the first book of cyanotype images from the natural world.
The Continuum show will be up through October 26. Studio & will host an artist talk on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 2pm. Please join us.
Catch the fabulous work of Andrea Martens along with the other artists of the Continuum exhibit throughout this week at Studio &. Here is hoping you can make some time to come by the gallery and see this wonderful exhibit.
A bit about the work from Andrea:
Andrea Martens’ pieces in the “Continuum” exhibition at Studio & are from her current body of work, titled Evanescent Series. The works in this series reflect on impermanence. Within the series she continues her printmaking research into our human footprint and its impact on our world. Slowing down and responding to process, as well as being open to alternate outcomes is important to Martens in her work.
The prints in the exhibition include traditional printmaking processes like intaglio, chine collé, and
handmade paper, as well as hybrid approaches to printmaking that incorporate both digital and traditional techniques. Martens has been a member of the Boston Printmakers since 2008 and has exhibited her work nationally and internationally. She has been teaching at the college level for twenty years and has done artist residencies in New Zealand, Venice, & Vermont.
The Continuum show will be up through October 26. Studio & will host an artist talk on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 2pm. Please join us.
The work of Mary Ellen Long along with the other artists of the Continuum exhibit remain on display throughout the week. Make some time to come by the gallery and see this wonderful exhibit.
A bit about the work from Mary Ellen:
This work began in 2020. The beginning of the pandemic. Time slows down - quiet in the studio - A period of reflection and meditation. But within this new landscape, I was drawn to CHANGE.
The time allowed me to experiment and take risks - be WILD! - back to color and new forms, shapes, media and combinations. Sometimes this work looked too extreme for me - but I learned to accept this as the process of discovery and a new way of working and experiencing.
The Continuum show will be up through October 26. Studio & will host an artist talk on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 2pm. Please join us.
