LPOSC is pleased to announce that it has been awarded Accreditation from the Land Trust Accreditation Commission, joining a network of over 450 accredited land trusts across the nation. The rigorous accreditation program requires extensive documentation, hundreds of hours of staff time, extensive Board member involvement, and a comprehensive third-party evaluation. Accreditation is a mark of distinction reserved for organizations that meet rigorous quality standards, including sound finances, ethical conduct, and responsible governance, and strive for continuous improvement.

“Accreditation demonstrates LPOSC’s commitment to permanent land conservation in Southwest Colorado” said Adrienne Dorsey, Executive Director. “We are a stronger organization for having gone through the rigorous accreditation program. Our strength means that the lands and waterways that make Southwest Colorado so special will remain forever.”

Is your property in need of noxious w**d management or wildfire mitigation? There’s a way to tackle those projects effectively, efficiently, and in an environmentally-friendly fashion – AND the crew is super cute!

DuranGoats uses goats to reduce wildfire fuel loads and invasive w**d species. With their uniquely vigorous appetites and digestive systems, goats will eliminate hazardous underbrush in fire-prone areas and reduce the seed-bank of unwanted w**ds on pasture. At the same time, the will leave behind fertilized soil, setting the stage for a healthier future landscape. Find out more at www.durangoats.com.

Our Story

La Plata Open Space Conservancy (LPOSC) protects lands enjoyed by local residents and visiting tourists alike. With over 30,000 acres of land protected by conservation easements, LPOSC ensures that working family farms and ranches, public recreational parks, wildlife habitat, wetlands and watersheds, historic and archaeological resources remain for us, and for generations to come.

Throughout our 25 plus years of operation, the Conservancy has used private conservation easements to permanently protect from development thousands of acres of Southwest Colorado’s most cherished working lands, and those lands’ associated water resources.

LPOSC’s conservation efforts are not, however, limited to working lands. Rather, they reflect the diversity of population and geographic area we serve, ranging from permanent protection of open space and park lands located within Durango’s city limits, to the recent acquisition of a privately owned mining claim located within the Weminuche Wilderness in San Juan County.

Southwest Colorado lands are currently experiencing unprecedented and intensifying development pressure. That pressure makes the conservancy’s work to protect additional special places, and to legally defend special places already conserved, more vital than ever. The Conservancy’s successes have depended and will continue to depend on the caring and generous members of our community and visitors who understand how important LPOSC’s work is.
