As we continue to celebrate Black History Month, we’re showcasing the rich history, dynamic culture, and achievements of the 12 HBCUs that hold CSD programs.

Today, we’re highlighting the North Carolina Central University (NCCU)—the nation’s first state-supported liberal arts college for Black students.

“Dr. James E. Shepard, a successful businessman who was thought to be one of the wealthiest African Americans in the U.S. during the early 1900s, opened the doors of the National Religious Training School and Chautauqua for the Colored Race in 1910. The institution was sold and reorganized in 1915 as the National Training School. The first four-year class graduated on June 6, 1929. In 1923, the North Carolina state legislature converted the institution into the North Carolina College for Negroes and dedicated it to liberal arts education and the preparation of teachers and principals.”

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders “features a curriculum that integrates research, evidence-based clinical experiences, and a focus on serving diverse populations. Students benefit from faculty who are teaching courses and supervising in their primary areas of research and clinical interest.” Since 1976, the department has operated the Speech, Language, and Hearing Clinic—a full-service campus clinic where graduate students provide services under the direct supervision of licensed SLPs certified by ASHA.

“NCCU’s CSD program has been an integral part of my success as a graduate student, and I’ve been fortunate enough to learn first-hand how special this program is. What’s great about this program is that it is full of diverse and culturally competent individuals. I’ve been able to collaborate and learn from my professors, supervisors, and peers, all while experiencing a variety of clinical situations that will undoubtedly shape me into a well-rounded speech pathologist in the future.”

Benefitting from Supervising an SLPA It was a pretty typical workday. I had recently returned to work as clinical director at a private practice after maternity leave. My community relations liaison came into my office, excited about an application he received for a speech-language pathology assistant (SLPA). As I reviewed her resume,....
