Unbought, Unbossed, & Standing Up for Durham. I look forward to earning your vote.
Team Burris, I want to express my gratitude to the 3,011 Durham residents who supported me in my bid for the Durham City Council. While my campaign was unsuccessful, I am grateful for your votes and support. I would also like to thank my campaign team, volunteers, friends, and family for their unwavering support.
My candidacy was not self-serving, but rather, it was people-centered. I vow to continue fighting for the community I love and addressing the issues that were raised during my candidacy. The primary election results did not make the problems disappear. I am still committed to creating sustainable housing opportunities for renters and homeowners, prioritizing the needs of all Durham residents, and providing recreational opportunities for our youth.
Although I have decided not to endorse any remaining candidates for Mayor or City Council, I strongly encourage you to research and choose candidates who share your values. It is essential to elect leaders who will prioritize the needs of Durham residents and work tirelessly to create a better future for all of us.
Team Burris‼️Don't forget to vote tomorrow, October 10th, for the 2023 Municipal Primary Election.

During the 2023-’24 budget process, issues regarding pay for Durham City employees should have and could have been addressed. Yet, the majority of members of our City Council failed to collectively achieve a compromise or take meaningful action. Yes, there were small pay increases included in the budget, however, they were not sufficient to address the financial sacrifices made by city employees during the pandemic.
It is deeply disturbing to witness elected officials who recently overlooked the pleas of city employees during the budget hearings, now stand in what I'll describe as “faux-solidarity" with sanitation workers during their stand down.
I wholeheartedly support the demands of our sanitation workers and it is my sincerest hope that our current governing body will act swiftly. Our city employees deserve to be adequately compensated!
Performative leadership is a perfect strategy for eroding public trust. This is a prime example of poor governance and our City deserves better leadership.
‼️Final Public Hearing for The Durham Comprehensive Plan‼️
A few weeks ago, I shared information on the city’s Comprehensive Plan. City staff have been working on the new Comprehensive Plan for the last three and a half years (please see the original post below).
➡️A special joint City Council and Board of County Commissioners hearing will be held TONIGHT at 7 pm. The hearing will be held in the City Council Chambers located in City Hall at 101 City Hall Plaza, Durham NC 27701.
➡️Participation will be possible in person or virtually through Zoom.
The agenda and details on how to join these meetings are available here: https://engagedurham.com/201/Adoption-Process.
➡️You can sign up to speak in person right before the meeting or register to speak online. Online speakers must register by 2 PM today. You can also watch the meeting on the City’s YouTube page.
After the joint City/County public hearing, the City Council and the Board of County Commissioners will consider adopting the Comprehensive Plan at their respective regular meetings.
The City of Durham’s Comprehensive Plan outlines how we envision our growth and development, taking a long-range approach rather than focusing on the immediate concerns of today. Learn why I think your participation in this process is so important.

My involvement in Durham politics has always been an act of altruism rather than self-interest. I’m running to serve as a responsive voice for the most marginalized in our community. I'm running to represent those forced to make tough financial decisions. As a grassroots candidate, I am relying on our community for support. Please consider making a donation and joining our campaign's financial backbone. With a $50 contribution, we'll send you a campaign t-shirt.

True progressivism doesn’t consist of denying some city employees the right to upward mobility or denying them the right to live in the city where they serve and have established community.
Being a true progressive requires a heart in which you desire to see ALL people thrive and not being content with the plenty of us who are merely surviving.
Just because your immediate needs are satisfied doesn’t give you the right to ignore the plight of other people.
