“South Korean bluegrass group Country GongBang has been selected to receive the International Bluegrass Music Association’s 2023 International Band Performance Grant. This annual award is given to an especially promising act from outside the United States to help assist with travel expenses and Visa difficulties.

The band name, rendered in Korean as 컨트리공방, roughly translates to Country Studio Performance, or Country Study Show. It comes from a popular Korean phenomenon where students are filmed studying or doing homework, and has spread into music students practicing. Other students and people generally have enjoyed these sort of videos, along with similarly-themed mukbang videos, where people film themselves eating, often in absurd quantities.

Country GongBang plays a very tasty form of contemporary bluegrass, writing and singing in both English and Korean, which has been well received internationally via YouTube and other online venues. The band played at the La Roche Bluegrass Festival in France, and the Takarazuka Bluegrass Festival in Japan.

They had been selected as an official IBMA Bluegrass Ramble Showcase Artist in 2020, which tuned out to be in a digital format due to COVID shutdowns. But their showcase video proved to quite popular and surely helped them with this ’23 Performance Grant.

“Country GongBang created quite a buzz with their performance during IBMA’s Virtual World of Bluegrass in 2020, so it is exciting that, as this year’s IBMA International Band Grant recipient, they will perform in Raleigh this fall and on a US tour in 2024. Powerhouse art-rock, cello-core, Lung, consists of Kate Wakefield, a classically trained opera singer and cellist, and drummer Daisy Caplan, formerly the bassist of Foxy Shazam. Fierce, ethereal, and heavy as hell, Lung rocks with the intensity of early grunge, layered with sinister undertones. Described as "loud, dissonant, innovative, and fearless" (Fair Shakes and Just Dessert). Wakefield runs her cello through distortion pedals and big amps, and Caplan pounds out earthquaking beats on epic horn-shaped, vintage drums. A relentless touring machine, the duo has played over 800 shows across North America and Europe, on bills with Brainiac, Screaming Females, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Big Business and so many more.

Originally formed in Toronto back in 2015 as a part-time project between Cam Hilborn (vox, songwriter, guitar) and drummer extraordinaire Aurora Evans, Wine Lips quickly escalated into a full-blown, full-time, full-on international phenomenon. Their debut album took them across North America followed immediately by an intensive and unexpected tour of Hong Kong and China in 2018. They released their massive “Stressor” album the very next year (2019) to rave reviews and massive critical acclaim. Multiple tracks from Stressor charted across North America and Europe radio, while several songs ended up being featured in broadcast and Netflix series. Endless touring ensued.

Then 2020 happened. The band used their mandatory downtime to fully dedicate themselves to crafting their groundbreaking third full-length “Mushroom Death S*x Bummer Party” (recorded by Simon Larochette at Sugar Shack). The record was released in October 2021 and then s**t really hit the fan. The international music press lost their collective minds, penning over 250 glowing features and super positive reviews spanning 35+ countries. At the time of writing, the album is rapidly approaching 20 Million spins on Spotify alone. The vinyl release of MDSBP is currently in its 7th pressing with 9 different colour variants. The lead track “Eyes” has been licensed to a metric ton of films, series and video games including ABC’s The Rookie, Hockey Night In Canada and VR Skater. Even more endless touring ensued, except this time the venues were huge and mostly sold-out.

Which brings us to the new record… “Super Mega Ultra” is an absolute beast. Recorded by Simon Larochette at The Sugar Shack in Ontario, the album is jam-packed with 12 ramped-up supersonic ear-scorching auditor delicacies. SMU is probably Wine Lips’ most ambitious undertaking to date, exploring new thematic territory while firmly maintaining their signature psych garage punk rock panache.

“Nashville-based indie-rock outfit Twen make quite a first impression with debut single “Waste,” the lead track from their yet-to-be-announced first full-length studio album. The band, anchored by lead vocalist Jane Fitzsimmons and guitarist Ian Jones, have also signed to Frenchkiss Records and announced a tour in support of White Reaper.

Twen, who came up through the Boston DIY punk scene, have been a hard band to find thus far, at least online: A search of streaming services returns only a self-titled 2017 live EP, recorded during the band’s debut performance in a Beantown basement. Twen have been honing their live show on the road ever since, taking their DIY approach across the country while piecing together their first album. Stay tuned for more on that front, as we can expect the album’s announcement and release both sometime in 2019.” - Paste Magazine

Eric Slick is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from Nashville, TN. He’s performed and recorded with Dr. Dog, Taylor Swift, The War On Drugs, Waxahatchee, Kevin Morby, Ruston Kelly, Adrian Belew, Ween, and many more. Eric has several studio albums, including 2020’s acclaimed Wiseacre.

Mariee Siou has been a fixture in the Neo-folk scene since her 2007 debut "Faces in the Rocks"—now acclaimed as a cult classic in the indie music world. She is revered for her delicate finger picking and poetic mysticism, often drawing, as from the ether, immense feeling through a voice of soft potency and otherworldly wordsmithing. She is known as a healing singer and as being a visionary artist, channeling and transmitting medicinal qualities through her music. Mariee Siou has extensively toured Europe and the US, and opened for acclaimed artists like Mazzy Star, Buffy St. Marie, Bert Jansch, Brightblack Morning Light, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, and Joanna Newsom. In 2021 she played Le Guess Who? In Utrecht, Netherlands, at the invitation of Phil Elverum of The Microphones/Mt. Eerie, and she continues to tour the US and Europe.

The Onlies are a young group of old friends who perform together in a stringband. They grew up playing fiddles, guitars, and banjos in their hometowns of Seattle, WA and Lexington, VA. With their latest self-titled recording, the band digs deep into performances of traditional American popular (old time) music. The music moves with a pulsating drive, sharp arrangements, and rich vibration — it resounds with the present. Their new release (THE ONLIES) is their fourth full-length record, though it will be their first one since joining with Leva in 2017. The band, all still in their twenties, won first place at the Clifftop Appalachian Stringband Festival in 2017, has toured the US extensively, and are the artistic directors of the renowned camp Fiddle Tunes in Port Townsend, WA. They have performed and collaborated with Bruce Molsky, Elvis Costello, Tatiana Hargreaves, Foghorn Stringband, The Bee Eaters, John Herrmann Meredith McIntosh, and Darol Anger, among others. Their newest record is produced by Caleb Klauder (Foghorn Stringband, Caleb Klauder Country Band), and features Nokosee Fields (Western Centuries, Steam Machine) on bass. It is a committed engagement with the histories and futures of old time fiddle music.

Second, Hayden lived in these songs, translating them through improvisation and dynamic exploration into emotional juggernauts – instrumental music that sings to the audience.

Landing in his hometown of Amarillo, Texas for the holidays to perform at The Amarillo Globe-News Center – home of the Amarillo Symphony – a gorgeous and beguiling set was recorded in front of a crowd of nearly five hundred people. Put to tape by Nathan and Joe Luscombe, mixed by Davis Hart, and mastered by Stephan Mathieu, Mexican Summer proudly presents Hayden Pedigo’s Live in Amarillo, Texas, an album that could one day be mentioned in the same breath as John Fahey's The Great Santa Barbara Oil Slick and Townes Van Zandt's Live at the Old Quarter.
