It’s been an extraordinary summer so far for our LEAP summer intensive dancers! Thanks to the generous support of donors like you, these talented young people are pulling strong toward the finish line.

This special moment is from week two of the Debbie Allen Dance Academy summer intensive in California. Lauren Tyler, Evangelina Vanie, Laila Sutton, Delaney Hudson and Kalea Robinson (left to right) met world class ballerina Michaela DePrince, who was a guest artist at DADA for a full week. They were privileged to participate in classes, a lecture and even a book signing with her. With a story as powerful and inspiring as the beauty of her dance, Michaela’s week of mentorship with our dancers has amplified Empower Dance Foundation’s mission of the holisitic development of our students—body, mind, spirit. What a joy!

Today, as we lean in to Mother’s Day weekend, we honor and uplift Chairwoman of the Empower Dance Foundation board and Mom-in-Chief, Mrs. Pam Asberry Oxendine!

Mrs. Oxendine, or Mama Pam, as she is affectionately called, embodies the spirit of motherhood at Empower, gently elevating us all with her warm essence of decorum and respect. She is sincere, prayerful, heartfelt, fun, wise and effective in her various roles.

Mama Pam’s capacity to love children fiercely extends to her five adult children—including Empower Dance Studio founder and owner, Nicole Oxendine—and three grandchildren, AND to the collective of children entrusted to Empower. “I love them ALL!” is what you’ll hear her say. Most importantly, it’s what you will feel her DO when she consistently shows up with tangible support and care.

Mrs. Pam, thank you for advocating for our children through the Empower Dance Foundation, for valuing fellow Empower moms and for sharing your story. Thank you for nurturing our children in etiquette at summer camp, for intentionally and publicly affirming parent contributions within the Empower community and for gracing us with your fabulous classic style!

Indeed, you are well-roundedly beautiful! And, indeed…we are blessed by you.

Who are you comparing yourself to? Your child to? Your spouse, your work, your things…. Who sets the standard for you?

Comparison (that nagging thief of joy) is a matter of human nature. Thankfully, being human, we can choose to align our thoughts differently. We can, indeed, learn the lesson of contentment in striving—of self-love in the midst of building toward better. Even as we graciously draw inspiration from others, let’s remember that we were always meant to be one-of-a-kind. Let’s stand in our uniqueness. Let’s be our own standard.
