How it began...
Just as all Cancer Warriors have a story, so does our CC founder, Jamie Callahan. She was a 37 year old wife to Joe, and mother to three young kids, ages 6, 4, and 2. She took great care of herself, was a fitness fanatic, ate like most of us wish we did … she was the picture of health. But in March of 2018, she became very sick, very fast. And after three long weeks of excruciating pain and no answers, she was diagnosed with Diffuse Large B-cell Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. It was stage 4 and had spread throughout her whole body. The devastating news was the scare of their lives, and it was only going to get harder as her journey through treatments began. But Jamie is a warrior and after battling for a year, she finally received her first CANCER FREE scan! A few months later while still under the careful watch of the CAR-T clinical trial she had entered, but in Complete Remission, Jamie and her family were able to focus on just how much the past year had changed their lives forever. Jamie and Joe have a lot to say about that "cancer year" but, more importantly, they have a lot they want to do because of it. Now, they are determined to show that CANCER CAN’T stop them.
When Jamie was first diagnosed, she and Joe scrambled to keep the pieces together. Joe started a page (Jamie’s Journey Fighting NHL) to help others show their support for her through treatments. They asked family and friends to wear ‘Jamie’s Journey’ bracelets to help pick her head up and get her ready for the fight ahead … and what happened over the next few months was simply unbelievable. The support Jamie, Joe, and their kids received was incredible. Family, friends, their community, and people from all over the world rallied together by sending words of encouragement, meals, gifts for her and the kids, and much more. The support, and the countless prayers she received on a daily basis helped keep Jamie focused on getting through all of the chemo rounds, the numerous inpatient hospital stays, the horrific side effects, and the overall mental struggle of fighting for her life. They are forever grateful for everything that people did for them, and they realized that CANCER CAN’T take that away. It can’t take away the love and support that they felt, and still feel, on a daily basis today.
“It was life changing being on the receiving end of all of this incredible kindness. We all know the saying ‘people are good’, but what we experienced was a lot more than that. People are kind. People are loving. People are supportive. And it’s all because people CARE.”
For Jamie and her family to experience this level of love, so deeply and in so many ways, was inspiring beyond words. So, as Jamie got healthier, they knew they needed to come out on top of cancer and do something bigger. Joe and Jamie wanted to have something tangible, something positive, that they could take away from cancer. With that, they decided to start our charity called CANCER CAN’T. They needed to give back and help others going through the same thing. They quickly put the wheels in motion and assembled a few of the best people on Earth, and the CC Team was born.
