3 Interesting Facts You May Not Have Known About
Memorial Day

Each year, Americans spend the Memorial Day long weekend relaxing with friends and family and ushering in the summer months. However, while the holiday is often treated in a celebratory manner, its true purpose is to honor and commemorate all those who have lost their lives while serving their country in conflicts both at home and abroad.

As you observe Memorial Day this year, here are some interesting and lesser-known facts to keep in mind:

- It was originally called Decoration Day. The traditions surrounding Memorial Day began in the wake of the Civil War, which claimed the lives of over 600,000 soldiers. After the war, veterans in both the North and the South would decorate the graves of their fallen comrades with flowers. In 1868—three years after the Civil War ended—veteran John Logan established Decoration Day to be recognized on May 30. On that day, people would be encouraged to continue the tradition of placing flowers on the graves of their lost loved ones. In fact, the reason why Logan chose May 30 was that flowers would be in full bloom by that time. The first official National Decoration Day ceremony was held at Arlington National Cemetery and presided over by General Ulysses S. Grant.

- Memorial Day was not an official holiday until 1968. By the 1960s, the holiday had come to be known as Memorial Day rather than Decoration Day, and was intended to commemorate Americans who had sacrificed their lives in all the country’s wars, rather than just the Civil War. However, despite the prevalence of Memorial Day events and ceremonies across the country, it was not recognized as an official federal holiday until the passage of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act in 1968. This Act also established several other American holidays to fall on Mondays, including Labor Day, Veterans Day, and years later, Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

- Memorial Day is one of the few days when flags are ordered to fly at half-staff. Specifically, the proper etiquette for anyone flying an American flag is to raise it quickly to full-staff, then slowly lower it to half-staff until noon, when the flag should briefly be raised to the full-staff position once again to serve as a salute for those who have fallen in the line of duty. In addition, at 3 p.m. local time, Americans are asked to pause for one minute to silently pay their respect

Top Moving and Packing Hacks
to Make Your Move a Breeze

Whether you’re moving a few minutes or a few hundred miles away, the process of uprooting your life and all your possessions is rarely easy. Fortunately, a little planning can help you avoid common moving mistakes and ensure as smooth a transition as possible. Here are a few of the top moving and packing hacks to keep in mind:

- Do a purge of your possessions. The less items you have to pack, the easier your move will be. Moving is a great time to take a close look at everything you own—if something no longer brings you joy or you haven’t used it in more than a year, consider selling it, donating it, or throwing it away.

- Make a moving file. During the chaos of a move, the last thing you want to be doing is searching for an important document. To avoid this, start keeping a moving file with any contracts, bills, or other key papers related to your move and the purchase or sale of your home.

- As soon as you can, pack anything you won’t need until you’re settled in your new home. For instance, packing off-season clothing and décor or any other items you’re not likely to miss can help ease the workload as your move approaches.

- Book early. If you’ll be hiring packers, movers, handymen, or other professionals to help with your move, schedule them as soon as possible. This is particularly crucial in the current environment, when many companies are facing labor shortages.

- Separate your essentials. When it comes time to move, you’ll want to make sure that things you need on a daily basis—such as medications, eyeglasses, and other personal care items—are readily accessible. Therefore, designate a bag or box for these essential items and ensure that it stays with you wherever you go.

Time Management Strategies to Help You
Tackle Your New Year’s Resolutions

Whether or not you’re planning to make New Year’s Resolutions, the start of a new year is always a great time to set goals and develop better habits. But for many of us, the demands of daily life soon get in the way, and it can be difficult to find time to tackle those new goals. Regardless of whether you’re seeking to improve aspects of your career, health, relationships, or another area of your life, managing your time effectively can help ensure that you’re able to accomplish the things that are important to you.

Here are a few simple time management strategies to keep in mind as you tackle your New Year’s Resolutions:

- The two-minute rule. Have you ever forgotten to do an important yet simple task, such as paying a bill or making an appointment, and felt frustrated when you thought about how quick and easy it would have been to do the task on time? The two-minute rule can help prevent situations like that. If something will take less than two minutes to complete, just do it now as opposed to adding it to your to-do list. By quickly accomplishing small tasks before they become bigger headaches, you will gain positive momentum and free up time to focus on more important goals.

- The time management matrix. Popularized by Stephen Covey in his book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, the time management matrix (also called the Eisenhower matrix) offers a simple way to group your tasks in terms of urgency and importance. To use it, draw a four-quadrant grid: in quadrant one, list the items on your to-do list that are both urgent and important. These are necessities that should be attended to first. In quadrant two, list tasks that are important but not urgent—these are things that often get postponed, but deserve a higher spot on your list because they are crucial to achieving your broader goals. In quadrant three, list things that are urgent but not important—these are things that often get prioritized because they are fun or easy to accomplish, but are often just distractions that eat away your time. Take a close look at these items to see what you can eliminate. Finally, in quadrant four, list items that are not urgent and not important. These are generally time-wasting activities that should be avoided or given less time in your schedule.

- Batching. Often, simple distractions like emails, phone calls, and paperwork can prevent you from accomplishing your more important goals. The batching method suggests grouping similar tasks together and giving them your undivided attention so you can check them off all at once, without letting them infringe on the time spent on higher-priority tasks.

Upgrade Your Home’s Style with These
Top Design Trends for 2022

At the beginning of each year, interior designers strive to predict the décor trends that homeowners will gravitate towards in the coming months—and if your home is on the market, incorporating some of these trends may be a great way to appeal to buyers.

Currently, many recent and emerging design trends have been shaped by world events, such as the ongoing supply chain issues. For example, here are a few of the top trends that experts predict will be popular in 2022:

- Multifunctional spaces. Over the past several months, many people’s homes have served numerous roles: shelters, offices, classrooms, leisure spaces, and more. As working from home remains common, buyers may want to see that your rooms can comfortably be used for multiple purposes. For instance, even if you don’t have a full home office, consider setting up a workstation or showcasing multifunctional furniture.

- Neutral colors. Another trend that designers attribute to the pandemic is a preference for neutral colors, which help create a calming haven while the world remains in flux. If you’re planning to add new colors to your home—whether through painting, furniture, or accent pieces—opt for earth tones, such as beige, gray, white, and soothing shades of brown and green.

- Natural elements. In keeping with the trend towards earth tones, homeowners are increasingly bringing elements of nature indoors, such as plants, natural light, and ventilation. Consider purchasing a few easy-to-maintain houseplants, such as snake plants or pothos, and ensuring that trees and shrubbery near your windows are properly trimmed so there is nothing obstructing the sunlight.

-Vintage items. There are two main forces driving the affinity for vintage items: a growing focus on sustainability, and supply chain issues that are making it more difficult to purchase new goods. Luckily, quality vintage décor and accessories are generally easy to find at thrift stores, flea markets, and online marketplaces.
