At long last, the estate trial leads to a final decision on Aretha Franklin’s will. The jury’s decided that the 2014 will, secreted under a couch cushion and handwritten, is the valid will.

Aretha Franklin died in 2018; at first, no one even knew she had a will. Two handwritten wills then were found. Franklin was a resident of Michigan, where handwritten or “holographic” wills are legally permissible. Handwriting experts were called in the trial to help interpret the will copies. But as soon as they become legal adults, did you know that without some key legal documents in place, you won't have the ability to act on their behalf if needed or even learn important details about their medical condition if they were to get into a serious accident? https://yourestateplanninglawyer.com/preparing-for-your-adult-child-independence/

This month, take some time to meet with Lansing Estate Planning Attorney Nick Leydorf about how you can protect your adult child … and rest a little easier as they celebrate their freedom!

Prepare Now for Coming Estate Tax Changes 06/13/2023

One of the most significant changes Americans will soon see is the sunsetting of tax laws under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) of 2017. Individuals could see their federal estate tax exemption dipping to approximately $7 million, while couples could see a decrease to $14 million.

It's best to work with an experienced Lansing estate planning attorney like Nick Leydorf to review your existing plan to implement an appropriate course of action. This is especially important for clients who might not have been impacted by estate tax laws in the past but who will be in 2026 because of a combination of the lowered amount and any growth in their assets.
