Over the weekend, East Lansing Officers participated in ! Each officer, volunteered their time, and were paired up with a local child. Officers helped the children do an hours worth of Christmas shopping for themselves and their families. It’s a toss up on who had more fun, the kids or the officers! 🤷🏽‍♀️

It's Cyber Monday folks, and that means in the next week or so there will be an influx of packages arriving at your door. Unfortunately, that also means there will be an influx of "Porch Pirates" out looking for 'free' items.

Here are some things you can do to protect yourself against package thefts:
- Schedule delivery for a time you will be home so you can receive the package or request a signature be required for delivery
- If the above is not an option, see if the package can be delivered to the neighbor or at the post office so that the package is delivered to a secure place where someone is present
- If you have security cameras, set delivery or place instructions for packages to be left in front of them so if they are taken there is video of the suspects

We at ELPD would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all of those who have served in the United States military! We deeply appreciate all that you do – or have done – for this country! And, and extra special thank you to your families that supported, or still support you, in doing so!

ELPD welcomes, values, and seeks out America’s veterans to build an inclusive and representative workforce. The veterans of ELPD carry out the department's mission with the same bravery and selflessness as they did while serving the United States in the armed forces.

It’s with great respect that we celebrate Veteran’s Day with all of you… “to honor American Veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.” [Dep of VA]

Any veterans that would like to serve the East Lansing community, please check out some of our job postings for positions such as PACE Officer, Jail Officer, Police Officer, and Cadet here: https://www.cityofeastlansing.com/jobs.aspx

Thank you for your service!

Today we remember Officer James S. Johnson. Officer Johnson was shot and killed on October 25, 1984. He is the only East Lansing Police Officer to have died in the line of duty throughout our 101 year history.

On this date, Officer Johnson responded to 1801 N. Hagadorn #203 to conduct follow-up on a criminal complaint he was working. The senior citizen living at this address had reported that his vehicle was taken without permission by his aide. Upon entering the apartment Officer Johnson was immediately ambushed by both Wayne Lamarr Harvey and Patricia Ware. Harvey fatally shot Jim in the head. Both suspects fled the scene on foot; they were subsequently apprehended on Birch Row near Hagadorn. Just prior to their arrest the pair attempted to steal a second vehicle, killing the owner in the process. Both Harvey and Ware were convicted on multiple charges that included First and Second Degree Homicide. Harvey is currently serving a life sentence at a MDOC facility in Jackson.

At the time of his death, Officer Johnson, his wife Valerie, and their six children resided in Charlotte. He had served with the department for 13 years, 11 of those as an Officer. Prior to his time with the department, Officer Johnson served in the United States Army having attained the rank of Captain.

The ELPD Honor Guard team and Officer of the Year made their annual trip to Bedford, MI this morning where Officer Johnson and Valerie are buried. They completed some site maintenance and performed a flag ceremony to honor his memory.

Ofc. Johnson, you will never be forgotten.

Planning on celebrating the big game this weekend?! Hoping the Spartans pull off a win?! Pre-planning celebrations?! Let us remind you:

- medical amnesty applies in all cases in which minors are needing medical attention/help, we aren’t worried about the MIP then
- it is a misdemeanor to posses an open container of alcohol in a public place or a motor vehicle, and yes we know what’s in the solo cup
- smoking ma*****na in a public place is prohibited
- any noise leaving your property after 11PM is a misdemeanor offense
- any noise before 11PM is a civil infraction, unless you like us so much we get called back; then it’s another misdemeanor
- it is a misdemeanor to damage or destroy any public property for private property that is not their own
- it is a misdemeanor to start a fire or throw any combustible item onto a fire

We are just as excited as you are for the game, but help us help you. Celebrate safely. Celebrate responsibly.

Friends, we are seeing an increase in reports of larcenies that are occurring. We want to remind you:
• Never leave belonging unattended (ex. purse, wallet, bookbag, laptops, etc.)
• If you must leave valuables in vehicles, make sure the valuables are stored in the trunk or out of plain sight.
• Always make sure doors and windows of the vehicle are locked.
• Thieves will always salvage vehicles to find electronics, wallets, cash, and other valuables.
• Place your bicycles in well-lit, heavy foot trafficked areas and always lock them.
• If possible, secure a U-lock for the bicycle.
• Keys should NEVER be left in vehicles.
• Use an alarm if the vehicle is equipped with one.

What a successful Faith and Blue weekend! This year, we were able to bring 3 different events to our community. First, a coat donation drive where we collected almost 400 coats! The collection was followed by a coat distribution event where we were able to provide those in need with a warm jacket and a boxed lunch. Finally, we hosted a pizza party to better connect with our faith-based members and sponsors. We would like to thank all the faith-based organizations for collaborating with us to bring these awesome events to our community. We would also like to thank our sponsors who made this weekend possible. We are beyond thankful for these relationships and are already looking forward to participating in Faith and Blue weekend next year!

*PEACE Team Update*

In October of 2022, the Michigan State University Department of Police and Public Safety (MSU DPPS) and the East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) partnered to form the Proactive Engagement and Community Enhancement (PEACE) Team. The PEACE Team responds to incidents, initiates police activity, and engages with communities served based on crime statistics, law enforcement intelligence, and community concerns. The team has seized 27 illegally possessed fi****ms since its inception. For the first half of 2023 the PEACE Team has participated in 19 community engagement related activities. It is a priority of the team to connect with the communities it operates in. The team has also arrested 24 people in the first half of 2023 and has sought 66 criminal charges. The team is also committed to de-escalation and each member has completed a 40-hour Crisis Intervention training.

As we are entering the Fall Semester, the PEACE Team will continue to conduct law enforcement and community engagement activities in order to keep our communities safe and to connect with those that call East Lansing and Michigan State University home.

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” -Winston Churchill

During the month of August our sector 4 officers ran a back to school drive collecting school supplies to donate to Robert Green Elementary. Thanks to all the generous donations we were able to donate 4 full totes of school supplies that will be used by students this school year.

This past weekend, our Sector 2 officers and the PEACE team hosted a tailgate during the home football game against Richmond. Close to 500 free hotdogs were handed out and all the leftovers were donated to Haven House.
