Substance over Form

I’m learning that for a variety of reasons, I’ve spent much of my life focusing on form rather than substance. My focus has been on having my hair done perfectly, wearing the right clothes, having my makeup applied perfectly, living in the right place, furnishing it with the right furniture, working at the right job, and having the right man. Form, rather than substance, has controlled my behavior in many areas of my life. Now, I’m finally getting to the truth. It’s substance that counts.

Form is the outline; substance is what fills it in. We fill in the outline of ourselves by being authentic; we fill in the outline of our life by showing up for life and participating to the best of our authentic ability.

In my own illness and injury recovery these last 2 years, I leaned into paying more attention to how things work and feel, and not to what they look like.

I focus on substance in my life. I fill in the lines of myself with a real person - me . I am concentrating on the substance of my relationships , rather than what they look like. I focus on the real workings of my life, instead of the trappings. ❤️💪🎉

Form gives us a place to begin. But for many of us, form has been a substitute for substance . We may have focused on form to compensate for feeling afraid or feeling inferior. We may have focused on form because we didn’t know how to focus on substance.

This is me ……. Feeling stronger after working a partial schedule in my brick and mortar business. I’m feeling more like me every day ! Recovering from injuries that happened in April has been a major challenge. With full transparency I never thought this day would come. I couldn’t see my way out of the tunnel. But with the support of many friends and my team of amazing healers …. I’m finding my groove again. I still have a ways to go , but I’m in it to win it !!! The process has been slow, but slow is smooth and smooth is fast! I’m almost 12 weeks post injury and ready to think about getting on my bike again. So good to be with my clients again! Bring on the summer fun and new reunions with my clients.

I gave up growing plants in my home shortly after I started raising children and family pets. They just didn’t seem to thrive and grow with the lack of attention I gave them. To be fair and show grace to myself ...... I was busy feeding and tending to the 4 kids, 3dogs, 7 cats, a few litters of kittens, a house, husband and myself. Plants were “not” a priority!

Do you ever read more than one book at a time? All of these are my current morning reads. Little excerpts of inspiration that duel me up for showing up as my best self on a daily basis. They are a great start to my day and give my wisdom for all areas in my life. The physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. I intentionally feed my soul so that I can show up as my highest level of support for myself and those in my daily path. How about you? What are you reading ?

Take care of you you. Prioritize it. And I’d only our watches would help us track it! Great read.

Wouldn’t it be cool if we could track our mental health the same way we track our physical activity?

We’d earn badges for things like “Made appointment with a therapist!” and a “No” badge where we were able to say no to something that stresses us out.

Rather than activity rings, our mental health rings would keep track of time with our therapist. Another ring could track time spent unplugged from technology and a third would track time spent doing something just for yourself.

I’d sign up for that. It’s equally important to track our mental health and it’s something I haven’t prioritized for a long time. I’ve been in survival mode for almost a year and it’s taken a toll.

Now that my kids are back in school a couple days a week, I’m proud I’ve already earned the first badge and closed a ring.

Taking those first steps is HUGE for me and I couldn’t have done it if I hadn’t been inspired by my online friends talking openly and my real life friends encouraging me every day.

I’m looking forward to working through the clutter in my brain, learning how to deal with stress, and moving closer to the person I want to be.

I’m excited to close the “Take Time For Yourself” ring. Like I have a date with myself. Maybe I’ll drive into town and browse that little boutique I’ve been dying to check out. Or Maybe I’ll just take a long walk with my dog and my music.

Maybe you’re ready to earn a new badge yourself. And it’s ok if you’re not. But I encourage everyone to make yourself a priority however that looks for you. You deserve it.

“I didn’t want to get up and do something positive for myself, But I did “
“And that’s where I win “.
Great read.

I forced myself to get dressed and go down to the waiting treadmill in the basement.

But I didn't want to, no.

I wanted to bask in my insecurities.
I wanted to dwell on my past decisions.
I wanted to relish in everything I'm not and forget about everything I am.

And that, for me, is my depression's finest moment.

Depression doesn't want me to feel good or worthy.
It certainly doesn't want me liking myself or taking pride in all I've accomplished.

Instead, it feeds off madness. It soaks up all the negative and splashes it around like a canon ball in the water.

And for what?
So, it can survive.

You see, I've started back up on meds and I've been feeling a drastic change. A welcomed change.
But apparently that puts a damper on the control my depression wants over me.
It wants to whisper sweet evil in my ear until I start believing it's true.

"You're not funny." "You can't write." "You haven't accomplished much." "You're a loser."
"You aren't good enough."
And my favourite, sweet crippling comparisons.

Hard. Stop.

It certainly was not easy task, but I picked myself up off the bed, my face red and puffy and my muscles tense and resistant.
I wiped the salty tears away and pulled my hair into a tight bun on the top of my head.
With sword and shield in hand, I got ready for the fight.
I pushed myself down the stairs, one foot in front of the other.

It wasn't until I was halfway through my second round of lunges that I realized something

I thought I didn't want to move.
I thought I didn't want to feel better.
I thought I didn't want to be okay.

But I did want all that.

Depression made me think otherwise.
Depression wanted me to sink into a dark black hole and veg.

Depression likes to trick me at the best of times, and I've got to give it credit; it does a fine job at pushing my faults to the front of the line.

But what it doesn't realize is that I'm stronger.
I've been doing this for a long time and I'm aware of its malicious intent.

It's never easy, but I grow more powerful with each episode, no matter how small the growth may be.

I didn't want to get up and do something positive for myself, but I did.

And that's where I win.
