Originally designed by ASHRAE to rate air filter effectiveness, this particular rating is an abbreviation for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, which is calculated by comparing a filter's efficiency to the particle size it can capture.

Quick tip: a filter within MERV 8 to 13 is recommended for commercial settings. More specifically a MERV 12 to 13 is recommended for buildings with higher indoor air quality requirements like hospitals and labs.

As a multi-site facility manager across the country deal with extreme temperatures this week and into the weekend, ensuring the safety and efficiency of operations is paramount.

Here are some quick tips from the TCG team to help keep your facility cool in what may be the first of many heat waves this summer:

☑️Keep an eye on indoor temperatures across all sites. Use smart thermostats and monitoring systems to maintain a safe environment.

☑️Make sure you are up-to-date on regular inspections and maintenance. Clean filters, check refrigerant levels and inspect electrical components to prevent system failures during peak heat.

☑️Check all air conditioning units are functioning efficiently and, if you haven't yet, implement remote monitoring tools to keep track of HVAC performance across all sites.

☑️Focus on maintaining optimal conditions in critical areas such as server rooms, medical facilities, and high-occupancy zones. Ensure these areas have backup systems in case of primary system failures.

☑️Set up designated cooling areas within your facilities, especially in high-traffic or vulnerable zones.

☑️ Review and communicate emergency response plans with your team. Make sure staff are trained to recognize and respond to signs of the HVAC system being stressed and/or malfunctioning.
