The fitness industry can be a pretty morbid space at times. To say I’ve been jaded with it over the years would probably be an understatement, but there’s not all pessimism to come.
•
The reality is that the vast majority of people would rather consume sensationalized content, quick fixes, gimmicks, and inevitably opt-in to what could be categorized as the steaming-hot f***l content of the social media world. The amount of practitioners that I know who could literally change the world with their skill sets is innumerable, yet 9 out of 10 of them no one has even heard of them at mass: they’re not one of the “cool kids.” Okay, I sound pretty jaded 🤣.

The only pragmatic way to remedy this is to be a part of the message that actually provides helpful content that could help people reach their health and fitness goals irrespective if anyone cares or engages with it. This is part of the reason why I doubled down on fortifying my skill set with a masters degree. However, it’s also the reason I’ll likely spend less time making content that no one cares about in the near future🤦🤣.

The physique update that absolutely nobody asked for (except for my coach )!

Currently my coach and I are “recomp” phase, trading muscle for fat, though it doesn’t quite work that way. During this phase weight may not drop much, which it hasn’t. On this day I am sitting at 250.2lbs upon waking (~mid 250’s during the day).
•
Though I initially wanted to get back on stage the desire faded, which makes sense as I have never really enjoyed getting on stage. The process (the “journey”) has always been the thing that I adore: the training and diet manipulations over time watching my physique change. The plan is to get some gnarly photos and video content around the same time my better half steps on stage and best my physique of last year which was 230lbs DEXA 7.3% body fat. The goal would be the same body fat at ~8-10lbs heavier.

If there’s enough interest I may update more on the details of the process, but for now this seems to be more than enough given there was zero external interest prompting this update: just my personal documentation👊🏻🤓.

Learning through experience within a given field helps you assign importance to things within that field. This seems like a pretty simple concept right?

This is why you hear true experts in the “field” of health and fitness say “it depends” quite often. The reality is that many questions are far too ambiguous, they need more context: YOU NEED TO PROVIDE MORE INFORMATION TO GET AN ANSWER THATS CLOSER TO CORRECT FOR YOU.
•
What does this mean? Well, if you have questions, if you need help, seek out the professional who will tell you “it depends” AND then asks for more information. This is likely a person that can help you. And maybe that’s a bit of a stretch these days given the state of the industry, but this should cut out half of the BS.
•

and I took the 2019 IPE BIKINI WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP!!
•
It’s good to look back sometimes at the really cool things that have taken place and Sara winning the overall bikini world championship in 2019 was amazing!!
•
If you’re not familiar the is the worlds largest natural pro (drug tested) bodybuilding federation (amateur is the NANBF).
•
Sara and I put together an amazing run winning her first pro show to qualify for the world championships and then a few weeks later actually winning worlds!!!!
•
The principles of diet and training done change much for the bikini division regardless of federation so our apparatchiks was pretty par for the course. She and I trained in person to nail down our training plan and she killed the diet week-over-well and took home the biggest prize the sport has!!!

To say the least Jacinta is a gem! Without question she does EVERYTHING to a “T” that we have put in place and it’s why she was so successful this year and why we’re going to cause some jaw-dropping this next year!

When we started our prep we were up against some TALL odds, and to be honest I was hesitant at first. However, I knew J was lights out on her compliance and had already responded well to training. Fast forward 10-months and we made it happen!!

“Recomp” for those of you who may not know is short for “recompositioning.” Essentially over time changing the composition of your fat-to-muscle mass ratio in a favorable manner.
•
I cannot begin to say how freakin proud of my man I am, and I mean that with all of my heart! As a coach I am always proud of the changes my clients make, but when you have a friend who you can relate to in more ways than one the “proudness” is more significant, haha.
•
Over ~4-months this dude overcame some major obstacles to drop ~20lbs but clearly change over body composition a ton! We achieved this by progressively bringing down calories w/ strategic caloric boluses, incorporating an APPROPRIATE amount of aerobic work, and of course progressively training to the point we pushed autonomics to be skewed. In plain English, we pushed him appropriately such that he was appropriately taxed at the end of his cut/prep, peaked perfectly, and then we backed off right after. Timing is everything 🤓👌🏻.

The thing that most people DO NOT realize is that their goal physique is quite often more than one “cut” away. Achieving one’s goal physique is tough, and often a moving target. As such, this is a journey, as cheesy as that may sound.
•
Evan is a good friend and I am so freakin happy to see HIM happy and to see the positive changes that he/we have made. Only up from here brotha!!!!!!

Losing bodyfat and improving health is a goal a large percentage of the population has: I think we can agree upon that!
•
My man Jason here made some simple changes and over the course of the last several months gradually, but consistency has lost 15lbs; and we’re not done!
•
The main sentiment here is that Jason had and has a goal that many have, the only difference is that he’s done something about it. We have a plan that includes whole foods, provides him ample protein, and we implement a mix of weight lifting and cardiovascular conditioning. It’s really not a rocket science approach, but it works….. almost every single time it’s out into practice.
•
I wish I had some amazing dietary and training protocol proprietary to my practice but that’s not this: this is an appropriate amount and type of healthy food and activity executed consistently.
•
Jason has stuck to this and has hardened the habit. At this rate he will be at his goal weight and body fat in no time AND, most importantly, he’s learning/employing the tools to keep that success!

One of my favorites, my “Day 1’ers” !

This is a 30-pound drop as she prepped for Masters USA’s and WON HER PRO CARD!
•
Karen works her a** off, trains harder than most anyone I’ve ever trained! She can tolerate super low calories, tons of cardio: she endures the “suck.”
•
I started with Karen as her in-person a decade ago (you read that correctly), at which time she was working with a very esteemed coach who dialed her in well time after time and she endured much more than any common day competitor can comprehend. She fell short of her pro card a handful of times JUST out of reach. I saw her bury herself for years and just grind: this woman has f***ing grit!
•
After a handful of years I was lucky enough to be both her trainer and coach. It took us a couple years but I’m so happy we were able to find a solution to her overall diet and training that didn’t bury her physically and actually brought her physique to the best overall condition and package we ever had: earned that pro card!!
•
I am PROUD to have such a wonderful, hard-working person to call a close friend on this earth!

Progress Takes Time!
•
Often women reach out to me feeling as if it’s impossible, or certainly out of reach, for them to naturally grow their glutes and overall lower half.nicoleeee absolutely proved that notion to be wrong.
•
Brooke and I worked together for a handful of years to successively help her gain muscle through a progressed diet and training regimen. Notice the timespan I referred to 😉.
•
If you want to have this type of transformation it is ENTIRELY POSSIBLE! You just have to have the willingness to be consistent (not perfect) to diet and training for a good amount of time.
•
The problem(s) I often see in these scenarios are improper overall training implementation AND the desire to stay lean through dietary means: if you try to build glutes and chisel abs at the same time only one or neither are going to happen. Gaining muscle takes a proper, congruent diet and training plan implemented over time with PATIENCE.
•

Is this the type of change you want to see in your body in just ~4 months? That’s right, 4 months and stayed nearly the same weight the entire time within a 5lb range top to bottom. All this while having a decent amount of travel!!
•
So, what did we do? It’s simple: what gets measured gets managed!
•
By simply tracking food and refining food content while controlling calories/macros such that we could create a progressive strategy was crucial. In other words, you have to track what’s coming in to manage it best and make thoughtful, strategic changes based upon how one’s body responds.
•
Additionally we had a progressive lifting program that certainly changed how her lower half, glute/hamstring region changed.
•

Bodybuilding Contest Prep

I love working with people who share the same passion for training that I do. That’s why it was truly a pleasure to work with my man Brian here for his prep.

Brian is routine: training, diet, everything that goes into bodybuilding. When you’re routine you never get too out of shape in the off-season, which makes prep a lot easier. This is why we didn’t have to make him suffer on poverty calories and marathon cardio during the several months that he dieted for the show, and still got peeled! What this also does is bring a better fuller, in my opinion better, overall physique.

Take home message: the most successful physique athletes keep a routine year round. Not just when they’re prepping/dieting👊🏻.

These are the stories I truly enjoy being a part of. I’m so proud of this woman for what she has accomplished!

It’s staggering the number of people come to me after cycling through multiple diets over years and still find themselves further-and-further away from their goal!
•
Call it what you will, but I have worked with countless people who are genuinely consuming substantially less than what they should be able to MAINTAIN weight on yet the scale doesn’t move nor does their body composition improve. This usually is accompanied by a host of other physiological issues like gut dysfunction and chronic fatigue just to name a few.
•
The painstaking part is we almost always have to take what SEEMS to be a couple steps backward before we can start making progress. I liken it to a slingshot: you have to pull back in the opposite direction in order to MUCH better launch forward! If we don’t do this we inevitably end up in the same place we started.
•
For a frame of reference this took roughly a year and was ~10lbs of change! Yep, this sh*! takes time. Improving metabolism, optimizing gut health, refining and utilizing the best exercise strategies that coordinate with our overall plan!

It seems that as, dear I say, educators we are often at the bookends of communication in the fitness space. Either we’re overly pedantic to the point that we’re only speaking to our colleagues or we render down concepts so far that the message is useless in practice, or even deada$$ wrong. Either way the audience loses out. The goal for any effective teacher should always be transferring a relatively complex concept in a way that the recipient not only understands it but can also DO something with it. My life is about to change!
•
I’m in the last week of training clients in Minneapolis, MN: the place I started my career and have practiced in for the last 12+ years. Over that span of time I have averaged 35-40 training hours per week of in-person, on the floor, working 1-on-1 with my people. After this week I won’t be training in-person for awhile, and when I do it will be ~1,600 miles from here. I have not been as excited for something in my adult life as I am for what’s next!
