A Walk Back in Time 2024
Thank you to those who joined us as our Edmonds Memorial Cemetery board members told the story of past Edmonds residents who physically shaped the community we know today through their determination and grit!
Portrayed by members of the Board and local historian Byron Wilkes, individual stories seek to bring to life the first days of Edmonds of those buried at the Edmonds Memorial Cemetery portraying the following people:
• George Astell, a logger instrumental in helping to establish the Yost Lumber Company, the Spring Water Company, and the Yost Auto Garage
• Charles Breed, an early settler who owned 160 acres surrounding Edmonds
• Adrienne Caspers, a 40-plus year schoolteacher in the Edmonds School District whose family Caspers Street is named after
• Eathel Engel Thayer, the daughter of L.C. Engel who built the buildings now home to the Edmonds Bookshop, Engel’s Pub, and the residence adjacent to the Edmonds Opera House
• Mathew E. & Clara A. Hyner, arguably Edmonds’s original power couple served as the town’s first postmaster and founders of the first church

Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the country. Why?
Because it’s easy-to-learn, great exercise, easy on the joints, and incredibly fun. The sport is sometimes described as "ping-pong on steroids." In the beginner’s clinic, you’ll learn the basics to get started playing the game. (Paddles/balls provided.) In the advanced/beginner's session, you’ll gain insights as to strategy, shot selection, and how to avoid the most common mistakes made by many players. Instructor Roger BelAir has taught 3,500+ players at world-class destination resorts to maximum security prisons. He's been profiled in Washington Post, interviewed on NPR, and featured in the front-page story in USA TODAY, A documentary about his involvement with prisons is in production. Ages 14 and Up.

City’s Hanging Flower Baskets Require Special Treatment
The City of Edmonds is having to take down all hanging flower baskets for treatment of a fungal infection. The entire Puget Sound region is experiencing an outbreak of Botrytis cinerea, commonly known as gray mold, due to extraordinary environmental conditions of heavy rains and cool temperatures which has allowed a typically dormant fungus to become active and thrive. It travels quickly through plant material and is found on a wide range of plants. It first appears as white growth on the plant and very soon darkens to a gray color. If untreated, it could kill the flowering plants in the baskets. Many jurisdictions and private businesses which have hanging baskets are managing this current outbreak.
The more than 100 baskets are being collected and returned to the parks maintenance shop Thursday and Friday, May 30th and 31st, to better facilitate treatment of trimming the plants and applying fungicide. They are tentatively scheduled to be returned to their hanging locations in a few weeks.
The baskets, which are available for annual adoption, were originally installed on May 14th.
The Edmonds Pickleball Tournament is just one month away! Grab a partner and join in on the fun! All games are played at Yost Park. All skill levels welcome!

The Edmonds Memorial Cemetery was placed on the Washington State Register of Historic Places in 1972 and has 625 veterans interred. In honor of Memorial Day graves of all veterans will be marked with a white cross and a miniature US flag.
About the Edmonds Memorial Cemetery
Edmonds Memorial Cemetery, founded in 1891, began on four acres of land donated to IOOF Lodge 96 by Thomas E. White, an early settler. It was sold into private ownership in the early 1900's. In 1982 Lawrence E. Hubbard deeded the cemetery to the City of Edmonds.
The Edmonds Cemetery Board is appointed by the City Council. The Board works with citizen volunteers and local residents to oversee site operations. A full-time Sexton is an employee of the Parks, Recreation, and Human Services Department. The Sexton manages sales, public services, burial arrangements and grounds maintenance.
Cemetery expenditures for labor, supplies, operations and services are paid through an enterprise fund account as the Cemetery is self-funded. Revenue is generated from cemetery sales and services. The Cemetery Board sets aside 10% of annual revenues in an endowment care fund account. Interest from the account will help support future maintenance needs.
Over the past 10 years the Cemetery Board has aggressively pursued improvements to the infrastructure. The Cemetery office has been renovated, the grounds and roadway improved, an irrigation system and well have been installed, and major equipment has been purchased. The beautiful new 680 niche Edmonds Columbarium was completed in October, 2006 complete with eternal waterfall. Each niche is suitable for two urns. Maps, cemetery and columbarium information is always available.
