A Pennsylvania grower reached out to us because he had 300 lbs of fresh cut ๐ฅฆ ๐ฅฆ๐ฅฆwithout a market. We were able to connect the farmer to a local grocer who paid more than the farmerโs asking price. We are now stepping aside to watch this relationship grow!
While this might sound like a small scale transaction, it is a big deal for our local agricultural industry.
This is one example of the 5 NEW markets we are establishing for Pennsylvania growers and ranchers. Food sustainability is nutrition security for everyone. ๐ฉโ๐พ๐ฑ๐
This week, we rescued 250 dozen FRESH eggs for 4 community partners! ๐ฅ๐ณ๐
A Pennsylvania farmer had a surplus and was planning to compost the eggs. By purchasing them, we created a market for the farmer. ๐๐ฑ๐ฉโ๐พ Our efforts contribute to food sustainability and nutrition security for all.
Life is good! you canโt find this quality at your grocery store.
What does the warehousing career track at Wilkes-Barre Area Career & Technical Center have in common with hunger?
Everything.
Thank you very much Penn State for showcasing our unique program that creates food equity in the school system.
True nonprofit growth or expansion happens when we acknowledge food as a human right for all, delivered in the way people define DIGNITY for themselves. ๐ฝ๏ธ
A government leader asked if I wanted to expand across Pennsylvania or the nation. I replied, "Our program adapts to the needs of the people. We will never force a community to conform to our program. So, how do you define expand?"
Expanding is a delicate issue when fighting hunger. We cannot treat hunger as a business or a platform for our egos. Often, the reality of hunger is misunderstoodโit's secretive, heavy, dark, frightening, and political. Hunger is used as tool of power over people in ways most of us will never comprehend, nor dare to explore.
It's easy to create solutions for the sake of recognition, accolades, awards, and funding. The real challenge is being a witness to hunger. This requires us to stop and listen with a full heart. It requires hard conversations and the humility to say, "I have it wrong."
๐ฝ๏ธ Food is personal.
๐ Food is safety.
โค๏ธ Food is love.
๐ช Food is empowerment.
๐๏ธ Food is freedom.

{Calling Pennsylvania Leaders in Food Justice}
There's a PA House Bill up for discussion on Tuesday. If passed, it will perpetuate the distribution of end-of-life (rotten) food, allowing food banks to claim meals served, corporations to receive tax donations, and food rescue organizations to claim CO2e savedโall at the expense of people who need nourishing SAFE food and who are at a high risk of food borne illness!
Iโm collaborating with several organizations to submit a statement regarding food safety guidelines. We are not against food rescue. We are for safe food rescue with standards and guidelines. If your organization would like to provide a letter, drop your email in a message. I'll send you a document to adapt to your voice, mission, and work.
This is an ethical issue and I vow to treat it as one moving forward. Any health care professional in hunger relief who supports and actively participates in the distribution of unsafe food violates their code of ethics. It is time to speak up and stop mandating the distribution of "as is" food.
There is something special about meeting 3 different farmers at a farm to load up our van! ๐๐จโ๐พ๐ฉโ๐พ๐๐ฅ๐

3 years ago we started a partnership with King's College, PA Shoval Center to improve food access. The mission for our FD team moved into the food equity sector very quickly. We know that if hunger is going to end, we have to fight against the food inequity that surrounds us.
We ask the difficult questions:
1. What is equitable for the people we serve?
2. What is equitable for the organizations handing out the food?
3. What is equitable for our local farmers?
....and then delivered results.
Thank you Suzanne for pitching a panel on our partnership with Kings. It was an honor to listen to your stories about the resilient local food system we created in NEPA. It would not be possible without Midwest Food Bank Pennsylvania and a network of over 20 farmers.
We are so excited to work on this tough, long, political path with you and so many other community partners. At the end of the day, if we do not support our local smaller farmers, we will all pay in the future.
Thank you Victims Resource Center for highlighting our work with your colleagues across the state....and getting them in the mindset to fight for food equity! It was a true honor.
Suzanne Beck from VRC, Clancy Harrison from The Food Dignity Movement, and Bill Bolan from Kings College presented โThe Food Dignity Program: A New Paradigm to Address Food Insecurity When Serving Victims of Crimeโ at the Pathways for Victims Services Statewide Conference held in State College this week. Their workshop highlighted the many ways that community partners can collaborate to address the often hidden food insecurity that is faced by victims of violence every day.
