Announcing the El Salvador Travel Study Opportunity
If you are interested in learning about English Language Learning and/or the Culture and History of El Salvador, please consider the Travel Study opportunity occurring this May. This travel study (May 11 through May 27) is established to support teacher candidates (Early Childhood, Elementary, Secondary, and ESL/ELL) as well as other SIUE students who are interested in immersion experiences addressing language, culture, and cross-cultural experiences. Each SIUE student partners with a Universidad Gerardo Barrios (UGB) teacher candidate in their English department to attend English and Spanish classes, Salvadoran P-12 schools, and cultural events, as well as historical sites for 2 weeks. SIUE teacher candidates can earn six ESL/ELL endorsement credits which address Illinois required clinical hours and cross-cultural studies or 3 to 6 hours toward a history endorsement. Those not interested in an endorsement can use these hours as electives. This exchange is open to other SIUE majors with the consent of the Faculty Program Leader. Newly graduated students and graduate students are eligible. Non-Spanish speakers are welcome. 3 to 6 hours can be earned through this two-week immersion.

Please join us on March 30 at 1 pm CT for a webinar titled “Lorca, Gay Icon” that will be given by Dr. Noël Valis, professor of Spanish at Yale University.
Dr. Valis recently published a book titled Lorca Afterlife about the life and work of the great Spanish writer Federico García Lorca. Lorca’s ex*****on at the start of the Spanish Civil War was not only horrific but transformative, setting in motion many of the poet’s afterlives. He is intimately tied to both an individual and a collective identity, as the people’s poet, a gay icon, and fabled member of a dead poets’ society. The specter of his violent death continues to haunt everything connected to Lorca, fueling the desire to fill in the gaps in the poet’s biography.
Register for the webinar here:
