Re: JULY 2021 Meeting Details
After over a year and a half, Post 303 will be having in-person meetings once again which is indeed something to celebrate. As such, our next meeting will be this Wednesday, 21 JULY 2021 at our regular location--the Cajon Valley School Board Room (750 East Main Street in El Cajon).
Due to COVID-19, please read and follow the restrictions below:
1. We will be having a dinner! However, all food and drinks will be furnished and obtained by Post 303. Do NOT bring any personal or homemade food to share with others.

2. As per the Cajon Valley School Board, ALL persons who have NOT BEEN FULLY VACCINATED against COVID MUST WEAR A MASK while in attendance (other than while eating). Please note there are no exceptions to this rule. Masks will be available for those who need them.

3. All in attendance who will be eating will be served food through a food line by some of our members who will be wearing gloves.
The rules above have been mandated by the Cajon Valley School District. They are simple enough to follow and are designed to ensure the safety of all in attendance.
Our meeting will start as in the past with a dinner at 1815, to be followed by our Opening Ceremony at 1900. At the conclusion of the Opening Ceremony, we will have a representative from District 22 present who will conduct the Installation of newly-elected Post members and the Executive Board for the coming term.
Our guest speaker this month will be Post 303 Commander, Mark Goodman, who will give a presentation on his time in Service as a Russian linguist in Army Intelligence in Europe as well as a brief history of the Army’s language school.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Post’s Judge Advocate, Wes Schermann at (619) 672-8404.

To understand a Military Veteran you must know:
We left home as teenagers or in our early twenties for an unknown adventure.
We loved our country enough to defend it and protect it with our own lives.
We said goodbye to friends and family and everything we knew.
We learned the basics and then we scattered in the wind to the far corners of the Earth.
We found new friends and new family.
We became brothers and sisters regardless of color, race or creed.
We had plenty of good times, and plenty of bad times.
We didn’t get enough sleep.
We smoked and drank too much.
We picked up both good and bad habits.
We worked hard and played harder.
We didn’t earn a great wage.
We experienced the happiness of mail call and the sadness of missing important events.
We didn’t know when, or even if, we were ever going to see home again.
We grew up fast, and yet somehow, we never grew up at all.
We fought for our freedom, as well as the freedom of others.
Some of us saw actual combat, and some of us didn’t.
Some of us saw the world, and some of us didn’t.
Some of us dealt with physical warfare, most of us dealt with psychological warfare.
We have seen and experienced and dealt with things that we can’t fully describe or explain, as not all of our sacrifices were physical.
We participated in time honored ceremonies and rituals with each other, strengthening our bonds and camaraderie.
We counted on each other to get our job done and sometimes to survive it at all.
We have dealt with victory and tragedy.
We have celebrated and mourned.
We lost a few along the way.
When our adventure was over, some of us went back home, some of us started somewhere new and some of us never came home at all.
We have told amazing and hilarious stories of our exploits and adventures.
We share an unspoken bond with each other, that most people don’t experience, and few will understand.
We speak highly of our own branch of service, and poke fun at the other branches.
We know however, that, if needed, we will be there for our brothers and sisters and stand together as one, in a heartbeat.
Being a Veteran is something that had to be earned, and it can never be taken away.
It has no monetary value, but at the same time it is a priceless gift.
People see a Veteran and they thank them for their service.
When we see each other, we give that little upwards head nod, or a slight smile, knowing that we have shared and experienced things that most people have not.
So, from myself to the rest of the veterans out there, I commend and thank you for all that you have done and sacrificed for your country.
Try to remember the good times and make peace with the bad times.
Share your stories.
But most importantly, stand tall and proud, for you have earned the right to be called a Veteran.
I’m a VETERAN!

If you are a Veteran, please copy, paste and share.

COVID-19 Vaccination Appointments
The County of San Diego (County) is currently prioritizing COVID-19 vaccination events for healthcare workers and employees and residents of long-term care facilities, based upon federal and state guidance and recommendations from the County's COVID-19 Vaccine Clinical Advisory Group. People 65 years of age and older are in the next priority group (Phase 1B-Tier 1) for COVID-19 vaccination.
Please first contact your medical provider to receive the vaccine directly. If you are not able to recieve the vaccine from your medical provider, please see below for additional options available to you.
If you work for an enrolled and approved COVID-19 vaccination provider, your employer will contact you directly about being vaccinated.
For all other healthcare workers, including those who work in organizations not enrolled and approved to provide COVID-19 vaccinations, you may register for an appointment at a County COVID-19 vaccination site if you are in an eligible group (see Eligibility list below).

Eligibility (Last updated 01/13/21)
At this time, the County is providing COVID-19 vaccinations only to populations identified in Phase 1A. Those in your facility/your organization who are eligible under Phase 1A criteria can schedule an appointment to be vaccinated for COVID-19 at one of the vaccination locations listed below. Fellow El Cajon Post 303 Legionnaires, Veterans and Patriots,

The Guest Speaker will be:
Captain Joel Stewart, USN
Commodore, MPSRON TWO
Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory

I have attached a copy of the agenda approved by the Post Commander for the Wednesday Zoom Meeting. I recommend that you print it out and familiarize yourself with the content to save time on Wednesday. Refer to the email for the attachments.

Here is the Zoom link for Post 303's video/tele-conference monthly meeting: https://cccconfer.zoom.us/j/94941935569 .

If the link is not active in this email, copy and paste into a web browser. We have exercised the link several times and it worked fine for me and others.
Please log on before 1845 on Wednesday; you can actually login right now to make sure you can get access. The link should take you straight to the Zoom Meeting. I am sending this to our membership via Blind Carbon Copy to protect everyone’s email accounts.

Call Wes or me if you have any problems with Zoom. We intend to keep the Wednesday meeting to about 45 minutes or less. We do not want to put the meeting’s link on Facebook, there are too many problems with unwanted visitors. Wear your Legion or Military hat so we can recognize you. Just kidding, we just don’t want to see the top of your bald heads. We should have about 50-60 join us which is what we normally have at our meetings at the School District.

When you have logged into Zoom it will bring up a pop-up window asking you if you want to Open Zoom Meetings? Click on the box below that says Open Zoom Meetings. Then it will present a picture of you (if your computer has a camera) tap on the blue box that says Join with Video. Then in the bottom left you will see a menu that includes an icon of a microphone and video. If the microphone is Red tap it one time to un-mute your device. If you don’t see the menu at the bottom, tap on your own picture and it will bring up a microphone icon which will probably be red.

You can go to the link anytime between now and Wednesday and probably find one of us there. Please don’t wait until Wednesday to work out the details of using Zoom.

I usually give more information than is needed so I highlighted the important information in red and blue.

Rob

American Legion Post 303

The El Cajon American Legion Post 303 was originated to support the returning veterans from WWI. Post 303, serves the East County Communities including; El Cajon, Lakeside and Santee Area. Post 303 was chartered in 1927 and has been in continuous operation to this day. The Legion and Post 303 has progressed from veterans’ affairs to also promoting Americanism and Children and Youth Programs that emphasize and support the American way of life. The post has met in various locations including many years at the Bostonia Recreation Center and for the last few years at the Cajon Valley School District in their Boardroom. We have not been burdened with a facility with a bar or restaurant to maintain. Our large membership greatly enjoys the no smoking or drinking facilities where we now meet.

The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, war-time veteran’s organization, which is devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is a not-for-profit community-service organization which now numbers nearly 3 million members, men and women, in nearly 15,000 American Legion posts worldwide. There are nearly 500 Legionnaires in El Cajon Post 303 and in our American legion Riders Chapter.

In addition to participating in numerous American Legion Programs, the post sponsors young men from 7 East County High Schools to participate in the Boys’ State Program, conducts a National High School Oratorical Contest and donates bicycles to El Cajon Elementary Schools at their Peace Builder Assemblies. Two of our Speech Contest participants have gone on to win the California Department Level contest. Additionally, Post Members participate in the Veterans Day and Memorial Day Ceremonies at several of the local elementary schools. Post 303 is a member of the El Cajon Main Street Flag Program which puts up 165 US Flags on all the National Holidays. Also the Post annually participates in the long running Mother Goose Parade. The Post is an active supporter of the area ROTC programs and goes to their commissioning events as well presenting a saber to an outstanding NROTC Midshipman. The Post also presents an American Legion Certificate to the Honor Graduate at the graduation of the Foundry which is a leadership program for Navy Petty Officers.

Post 303 is a family oriented organization which normally has 55 people attend our Monthly General Meeting which includes a free pot luck supper. Unlike other Posts we always have a guest speaker at out monthly meetings. Past speakers have included Congressman Duncan Hunter, Pearl Harbor Survivor Stu Hedley, Carlos Montoya a Bataan Death March survivor and General Bob Cardenas who was involved in the effort to break the sound barrier as well as Eddie Murphy, the XO of the USS Pueblo. Because of the Camaraderie of our membership, the Free meal before each meeting and our wonderful guest speaker program our Post has greatly increased membership has become known throughout District 22 as having one of the largest attendance at out monthly meetings.
