Volunteers in Medicine - San Diego
Founded in 2003, Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) is a free clinic in El Cajon serving those who cannot afford health insurance or medical care Thank you.
We operate by appointment only. Please call the clinic to schedule an appointment. This allows us to understand what your needs may be and pair you with a volunteer Healthcare Provider to meet those needs directly. Our volunteers work for us on an as needed basis and their schedules vary. Therefore, it is easiest for us to speak directly with you to ensure we find the best time and provider to assist you.
We are happy to share that the Grossmont Healthcare District (GHD) board of directors unanimously approved our grant submission for 2025. This is excellent news! Their level of support for this coming year indicates how vital VIM is to the community. Thank you for your continued support of the community we serve!
Come join us at our annual Ice Cream Social next week! Hosted by Chapel of the Valley UM Church, we'll have frosty treats, games, and fun!
We're looking for a volunteer coordinator to join our team - full details here on our website, or check our LinkedIn job posting.

We ❤️our volunteers! They keep us going & we couldn't do this without them. Donna O'Brien is one of our dedicated board members, who also spends time at the clinic helping get the garden in order & comes with us to health fairs to talk to folks about what we do. We're so grateful for Donna's time and energy - and her experience as a registered nurse provides her with valuable insight into how we can best serve those who need us.

This week is National Physicians Week, and this Saturday, March 30th, we celebrate National Doctors’ Day. It's a time to recognize the dedication and caring of physicians who dedicate their lives to helping us – whether it’s staying healthy when we’re well, or regaining our health when we’re not.
Doctors are among the most influential people in our lives, and it would be impossible to live as well without them.
Every day, people throughout San Diego County struggle with choosing between paying for food and a place to live, or going to the doctor and getting their needed medications.
Our doctors at Volunteers in Medicine are working hard to make sure that quality healthcare is a reality for all. Join us in honoring our exceptional family of physicians at Volunteers in Medicine San Diego. They not only volunteer their time, but they also invest their care and compassion for each one of our patients.
A big shout out to our team of physicians:

We’re VIM San Diego…But How Did We Begin…
Our History
Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) began in Hilton Head, South Carolina—born out of the kind heart of a retired physician—Jack McConnell. The good doctor often gave rides to hitchhikers and was shocked to learn that many of them were among a much larger problem…millions of people with no access to healthcare through no fault of their own. Because he was a man of action, he started the first VIM clinic in 1993. Since that first clinic, VIM has become a national organization whose primary purpose is to establish neighborhood medical clinics that serve the uninsured families in a Culture of Caring.
