This Day in Navy and Marine Corps History:
2017 - A team of civilian researchers led by entrepreneur and philanthropist Paul G. Allen announces they found the wreck of World War II cruiser USS Indianapolis (CA 35), which was lost July 30, 1945, in 18,000 feet of water. About 800 of the ship's 1,196 Sailors and Marines survived the sinking, but after four to five days in the water - suffering exposure, dehydration, drowning, and shark attacks - only 316 survived.

1954 - Operation Passage to Freedom begins. The operation transports refugees from Haiphong to Saigon, Vietnam.

1944 - Operation Dragoon begins, which is the Allied invasion of Southern France. Western Naval Task Force, commanded by Vice Adm. Henry K. Hewitt, USN, lands the Allied force on the front between Toulon and Cannes.

1886 - The Secretary of the Navy William C. Whitney signs General Order 354 establishing the Naval Gun Factory at the Washington Navy Yard, Washington, D.C.

1994 - USS Stout (DDG 55) is commissioned at Houston, Texas. The sixth Arleigh Burke-class destroyer is named for Rear Adm. Herald F. Stout for his actions as a commander of USS Claxton during World War II.

1988 - USS Lake Champlain (CG 57) is commissioned at New York City. The cruiser is the third ship named after naval battle in a New York lake where Commodore Thomas McDonough defeated a larger and more heavily armed British squadron Sept. 11, 1814.

The U.S. Navy Blue Angels are currently accepting applications for the 2026 air show season for active-duty E-5/E-6 billets within the following Navy ratings: AD, AE, AO, AM, AME, AS, AT, AZ, HM, LS, MC, PR, PS and YN.
Additionally, Chief Petty Officer applications are being accepted for MMCPO, ADCS, AMCS, and AEC. Platform specific experience is not a requirement to apply.
Exceptional E-4 applicants will be considered.
Due to Senior Enlisted Marketplace quotas and selection timelines, the following billets may be also available: ATCS, ATC, AMC, ADC, AZC, NCC, YNC, MCC.

2008 - USS Sterett (DDG 104) is commissioned at Baltimore, Md., the birthplace of the ships namesake: Master Commandant Andrew Sterett, who fought in the Quasi-War and Barbary Wars for the Navy.

1924 - USS Shenandoah (ZR 1) secures herself to the mooring mast on USS Patoka (AO 9), making the first use of the mooring mast erected on shipboard to facilitate airship operations with the fleet.

This Day in Navy and Marine Corps History:
1964 - USS Maddox (DD 731) engages three North Vietnamese motor torpedo boats. In the resulting torpedo and gunfire, Maddox hit all the boats, while she was struck only by a single 14.5-millimeter machine gun bullet. Air support arrives from USS Ticonderoga (CVA 14) and her planes strafe the three boats. Both sides then disengage.

1952 - During the Korean War, USS Carmick (DMS 33) is fired on by enemy shore guns in the vicinity of Songjin lighthouse. Returning fire, Carmicks battery fire silences the guns.

1918 - Headquarters Company and Squadrons A, B, and C of the First Marine Aviation Force arrive at Brest, France, on board USS DeKalb (ID #3010), as U.S. enters European Theater of World War I.
This Day in Navy and Marine Corps History:
2017 - The guided-missile destroyer USS Rafael Peralta (DDG 115) is commissioned in a ceremony at Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego. The ship honors Marine Corps Sgt. Rafael Peralta, who was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for actions during combat operations in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Last week the new Chaplain, LT Jerry Bertholet, was invited to speak at the Brawley Rotary luncheon! He spoke about the roles of Navy Chaplains and also the CNO’s Every Sailor a Recruiter initiative! The Rotary awarded him a certificate for visiting.

1964 - Four Navy divers (Lt. Cmdr. Robert Thompson, Gunners Mate First Class Lester Anderson, Chief Quartermaster Robert A. Barth, and Chief Hospital Corpsman Sanders Manning) submerge in Sealab I at a depth of 192 feet, 39 miles off Hamilton, Bermuda for an intended three weeks. The crew surfaces early on July 31 due to an oncoming tropical storm.

CNIC has implemented a relaxed clothing policy for military patrons at all of the Navy’s 80 shore galleys. The new Policy permits most civilian clothes that are clean, in good condition, do not contain offensive language or pictures and aren’t overly revealing. This includes sandals, board shorts and clean physical training clothing. 1944 - USS Gabilan (SS 252) sinks Japanese minesweeper (W 25) northwest of Zenizu, Japan.
