Congregation B'nai Zion

B'nai Zion Synagogue is a conservative congregation founded in 1900 and affiliated with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism and the Jewish Theological Seminary. In 1910, the sixty-five members purchased land at 902 N. Elk Street and completed construction of a building in 1912. The membership grew, partly from consolidation with a sister congregation, Achim Neemonim. As activities, progra

mming, and membership increased, the need for a new synagogue became apparent. In April 1926, ground was broken at 1416 N. Mesa, which was to be the synagogue's home for 57 years. The membership grew and the scope, activities, and programs of the congregation were expanded. These factors, together with demographic changes in the synagogue, necessitated the need for a new edifice. The present magnificent synagogue was completed in 1983, with formal dedication in October of the same year. B'nai Zion Synagogue is set in the foothills of the Franklin Mountains, which also serve as its backdrop. It boasts a sanctuary seating over 500, opening up to a large social hall with a stage. When opened, the two rooms can seat 1500. There are two Kosher kitchens, one for meat and one for dairy. A chapel with seating in the round is a more intimate place for daily minyans. The remaining areas include classrooms and offices for Talmud Torah, the El Paso Jewish Academy, a memorabilia area (our link with the past), youth room, gift shop, and administrative offices. Adjacent to the B'nai Zion building are two unique gardens. The Cantor David J. Leon Biblical Garden is designed to be a living map of the State of Israel, traveling from the Sea of Galilee in the north to Eilat in the south. The Jordan River provides a sound of Shalom and tranquility as it flows from Galilee to the Dead Sea. The walled city of Jerusalem and its Western Wall are highlights of the garden, along with the model structure of Masada. Tours of the Garden are a regular feature for members and community visitors. Across the way from the biblical garden is the Doris Eisenberg Garden of the Living. Designed in a desert format, the garden includes various species of trees and plants and a gazebo for relaxation and contemplation. Synagogue members plant trees to honor individuals and events on the occurrence of simchas or other happy occasions. Throughout its history and continuing into the present, Congregation B'nai Zion has strived to fulfill the traditional threefold function for its membership – that of worship, education, and fellowship.

As the High Holidays are here
, we find ourselves filled with hope and gratitude for the blessings we have received throughout the year. It is also a time for reflection and a deep sense of community, as we come together to celebrate and seek spiritual renewal. At Congregation B'nai Zion, we strive to create an inclusive and supportive environment that fosters a strong sense of belonging, spiritual growth, and tikkun olam (repairing the world) for all our members.

This year we have an exciting special opportunity that will allow us to further enhance our services and programs, building on our successes from the past year and ensuring that our congregation continues to thrive and provide for the diverse needs of our members. We are thrilled to announce that one of our members has offered a generous donor match of $10,000, if our membership comes together to pledge at least $18,000 towards our High Holiday Appeal (which replaces the in person Yom Kippur Appeal)

Your contribution to this appeal will make a meaningful impact on the following areas:

Enhanced Services: Your donation will help us enhance our High Holiday and Shabbat services experience for all members of our congregation, helping to fund upgraded onegs and kiddush lunches, musical enhancements including the visiting Cantor for the High Holidays, and special meal events to bring our community together.

Cultural and Congregational Events: This past year, we conducted several events which brought large numbers of our community together for programs including apple picking for Rosh Hashanah, creating planter boxes for Tu B’Shevat, and celebrating Shavuot at Café Italia learning to make fresh mozzarella, creating floral posies, and partaking in a delicious dairy meal. Your donation will allow us to fund more of these programs which enhance the quality of Jewish life in our Congregation and our community.

Support for Those in Need: Our "Food for Friends" program continues to grow, funded in partnership with the El Paso Jewish Community Foundation, which offers mid-week meals to our Jewish community, with no charge to those with a need.

Educational and Youth Programs: We aim to provide a nurturing environment for the youth of our congregation. This includes maintaining the Talmud Torah program and sponsoring a new BBYO chapter for our young members to build strong Jewish relationships locally, regionally, and nationally. We are seeing great energy as BBYO gets off the ground.

*A Minyan to a Million opens to the public on Wednesday, August 9 at 5:00pm with light refreshments.

Over the past 30 years, there has been a resurgence of Jewish conversions of “Crypto-Jews” or Anusim, Latinos who believe they are descendants of Spanish Jews forced to convert to Catholicism during the Spanish Inquisition. “A Minyan to a Million” encompasses nearly 20 years of multimedia documentary exploration of returning Crypto-Jewish communities of the U.S. Southwest and Latin America by artist, Peter Svarzbein.

This ongoing project utilizes different formats to document returning Latino families to normative Judaism. The first, a photographic and video essay and the second and more successful, an evolving food and art installation entitled “Conversos y Tacos Kosher Gourmet Trucks est. 1492.” From the artist’s perspective, Art is a universal language but food is the ultimate unifier. Food is love, care, connection and sustenance, holding a special meaning in both Jewish and Hispanic/Latino cultures. Svarzbein’s work aims to inspire and break down borders, whether cultural, aesthetic or geographic. His practice is focused on exploring notions of history and identity in La Frontera/ the border. Whether it has been shedding light on emerging Crypto-Jews to a larger Jewish or Latino community, or representing the unique relationship between Cd. Juarez, Mexico, and El Paso, Texas through the “El Paso Transnational Trolley Project”, his belief is that art can function as a vehicle for dialog and change.

About the artist:
Peter Svarzbein is a photographer, curator and disruptive media specialist . Graduate of the renowned Eddie Adams Photojournalism Workshop, Svarzbein earned his MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York. During graduate school at the SVA, Svarzbein created the “El Paso Transnational Trolley Project.” This self-created activist/artist project is the impetus for Svarzbein’s public service. His work advocating with community leaders resulted in TXDOT committing $97 million to construct a trolley route and refurbish the original streetcars that ran between El Paso and Juarez.

Svarzbein has exhibited work both nationally and internationally including a video installation in the Guggenheim's "Still-Spotting NYC" exhibition, at UTEP's Rubin Gallery in a bi-national exhibition "El Flow" and in the "Puro Borde" exhibition at the INBA Museum of Fine Art in Cd. Juarez, Mex. Of note was his interactive installation "Conversos Y Tacos Kosher Gourmet Trucks est. 1492" which was funded through a grant with the National Endowment for the Arts and featured on NPR's "Here and Now".

Join us for an evening of conversation and action, helping raise awareness of issues of asylum seekers and refugees in our country and communities. We will be starting with making food bags for our local food bank, El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank.
