EL PASO ARTIST LUIS JIMENEZ (1940-2006)

Yes, it's true. Tom Lea was not the only artist from El Paso!

Luis Jimenez studied art and architecture at the University of Texas in Austin and El Paso, earning a bachelor's degree in 1964. He moved to New York City in 1966 after completing his post-graduate work at Ciudad Universitaria, Mexico City, D.F.

He became an accomplished artist and taught art at the University of Arizona and later the University of Houston.

Primarily a sculptor, he also created color lithographs and colored-pencil drawings. He would use preparatory drawings for his sculptures, which are made of fiberglass cast in a mold, then painted and coated with epoxy.

His best known work in El Paso is his "Los Lagartos" at the center of San Jacinto Plaza.

Some of his works are on display at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.

🤩City Sighting …Check this out- Artist Bordalo II has been in El Paso all week to install a 64-foot mural mountain lion made out of recycled trash. The mural can be found on the west wall of the ONE San Jacinto Plaza building in downtown El Paso. The mural will become part of Bordalo II's "Big Trash Animals" series.
