🌻DID YOU KNOW🌻 Vincent’s “Sunflowers” isn’t just a single artwork — it's a whole series of paintings! Unlike other pieces where he focused on the emotion the work would evoke, the “Sunflowers” series was crafted to showcase his technique and skill. Vincent’s intent was to display the works around the Yellow House in hopes of impressing fellow artist Paul Gauguin when he came to stay with him in Arles.

Today, the paintings are spread across the globe and can be found in galleries such as Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum, New York City’s Museum of Modern Art, and London’s National Gallery! While this means they can be experienced by audiences all over the world, it also means they are rarely viewed as a series. This was temporarily remedied in 2014, when two of the paintings were brought together at London’s National Gallery for their first reunion in over 60 years!

Van Gogh had an eye for painting the night sky. Many artists of the time period would achieve this by making a sketch of their subject and then painting during the day, but Vincent preferred to capture his nocturnal subjects as he saw them. It’s said that to see his canvas in the dark that he would paint by gas lantern, or even with candles in his hat!

🌻DID YOU KNOW🌻 Van Gogh's works were likely even more vibrant when he first painted them! A team of European scientists used X-ray machines to study several of Van Gogh's paintings and discovered that the paint he had used was chemically unstable. This instability caused the yellow lead-chromate paint he used to tragically discolor over time when exposed to sunlight.

During his career as an artist, Van Gogh painted over 30 self-portraits. It wasn’t because he was trying to capture the perfect angle, he did it because he didn’t have the funds to pay for models to paint! Rather than give up and be stuck painting landscapes and still-life subjects, Van Gogh painted himself in his signature style!
