Charlie Washington, 65, had his right leg amputated below the knee earlier this year due to vascular complications. Determined to maintain his independence, he has worked incredibly hard over the past several months to build back his mobility.

Nashville, TN prosthetist, Nathan Dyer, and Post-Acute Rehabilitation Director, Erik Larsen, coordinated closely with the Nashville Center for Rehabilitation & Healing during Charlie's health journey. Charlie's daughter, Shawana (pictured alongside Charlie and his team), has also been a vocal advocate for her dad.

With a attitude that has carried him through a challenging year, Charlie is back to what he loves doing—getting out and about and enjoying time with his family. Kudos to your positive spirit, Charlie! ✨

Sgt. Justin Dodge, a 27-year veteran with the Denver Police Department, was working the Nuggets championship parade in downtown Denver last June, when crowds pushed through the barriers and swarmed the streets. During the commotion, Justin’s left leg was pinned underneath the wheel of a firetruck as it turned a corner. After numerous limb salvage surgeries, he underwent a below-knee amputation.

With tireless determination and the support of his community, including his Englewood, CO prosthetist, Zach Harvey, Justin has made an incredible recovery. Not only has he returned to active duty with the Denver Metro SWAT, but he’s also found a new purpose in motivational speaking and providing peer support to people facing challenges.

Justin hopes his story will inspire others to always believe in themselves, put in the work, and accomplish their dreams— to "crush the hard." 🧡 We're overjoyed to see you back on the squad, Sgt. Dodge, and we're impressed by everything you’ve accomplished and continue to achieve! 🎉🦿

A little over twelve years ago, Erin began experiencing pain in her left foot due to a congenital bone deformity called tarsal coalition. A routine corrective surgery resulted in Complex Regional Pain Syndrome ( ), leaving her in immense and constant pain that worsened over time. Erin, now 23, eventually lost complete function of her lower left leg, even amid countless medical trials and therapies to restore her mobility.

Last June, the California native traveled across the country to undergo surgery at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, where surgeons amputated her left leg below the knee. Now, a year later, Erin is thriving and has completed two 5Ks (thanks to a running blade from the Challenged Athletes Foundation), and returned to her favorite activities –hiking, rock climbing, acro yoga, boxing, and skiing!

She credits the great prosthetic care from her prosthetist Katherine Ching in San Diego, CA for helping to make her mobility dreams possible. Erin would also like to express thanks to her partner, friends, and family for supporting her throughout her journey and celebrating her new accomplishments.

Erin, your progress is amazing, and we’re here to support you every step of the way. Keep pursuing your dreams! 🧡

Celeste, 19, enjoys dancing, doing nails, and running a blueberry farm with her mom. Earlier this year, unexpected complications from a medical procedure led to the amputation of her left leg below the knee, as well as one of the toes on her right foot.

Since then, she has persevered through every obstacle and with the help of prosthetist Sarah Rushing and the Kalamazoo, MI team, she is back to walking again. "The support and dedication my Hanger team has for me is beyond amazing," Celeste shared.

As she adjusts to her new normal, Celeste is working on regaining her strength and believes that a positive outlook has helped during her recovery for not only her body, but her mind as well. Her message for others is that “Life is unexpected; you cannot plan a future without some type of obstacle getting in your way. However, your attitude means everything. Be the best version of yourself you can be through the journey.”
