**Today is WORLD DIABETES DAY**
Our Riceland Endocrinology Specialist, Jennifer East, imparts her knowledge to commemorate this day.

Type 2 diabetes affects 1 in adults worldwide, and about half of them don’t even know they have diabetes yet. It’s important to know the risk factors for developing Type 2 diabetes. Risk factors include:

▶️ Family history of Type 2 diabetes (biological parent or sibling)

▶️ Age over 45 years (although diabetes can occur at an earlier age as well)

▶️ Overweight or obesity

▶️ Are African American, Hispanic, Native American, Asian American, or Pacific Islanders

▶️ Had gestational diabetes while pregnant

▶️ Have high blood pressure and/or high cholesterol

▶️ Have prediabetes

▶️Have PCOS

Knowing your risk factors and seeing your healthcare provider for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan can reduce the risks of complications associated with uncontrolled Type 2 diabetes. Managing diabetes is a team effort with your healthcare provider, dietitian, taking your medications correctly, exercising, checking your blood glucose levels, and making healthy lifestyle changes that can greatly impact your future

The grieving process, though challenging, offers profound benefits for emotional healing and growth. It provides a structured outlet for processing intense emotions, allowing individuals to face loss and find meaning in their experiences. People can develop resilience, empathy, and a deeper understanding of themselves and others through grief. It's a transformative journey that encourages personal reflection, fosters emotional release, and ultimately paves the way for acceptance and moving forward while cherishing the memories of what's been lost.

Where are you from?
My dad had a career in the Navy so I grew up everywhere!

Where did you attend school?
My training began with college at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. I then attended Medical School at Wake Forest University. I spent 4 years at Mayo Clinic for my internship and residency, followed by one year of Interventional Pain specialty training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

When did you become interested in the medical field?
One of my jobs in college was in a medical research lab. I saw innovation paired with excellent patient care, and knew this was a place I wanted to be.

Who were your biggest influences growing up?
The physicians in the research labs were true mentors to me, and helped me discover which specialty of medicine fit my personality and strengths.

What are your notable highlights in the field?
The highlights of this profession are found in individual patients. It's always an achievement when you can improve a patient's pain so they can spend more time with their family, attend church, return to work, and participate in life the way they always wanted to.

What do you like most about your career?
Interventional pain management benefits from recent advances in technology to reduce patient's pain. The ability to integrate these new modes of treatment, and keep learning as new techniques are developed, is a great part of my career.

What is your patient care philosophy?
My care philosophy centers on my patent's personal goals. This involves a spectrum of treatments from the conservative (PT, TENS units, medication) to invasive (injections or minor surgical procedures). My patients trust I will listen to their concerns and work with them to reduce their pain and improve their quality of life.
