Misprinted banknotes are prized by notaphilists, those who collect paper money. Currency featuring overprints, mismatching serial numbers, misalignments and missing ink regularly sell for more than regular bills.
This 1996 $20 Federal Reserve Note is classified as a “Partially Obstructed Overprint Error”. This error occurs when something obstructs the printing process, for example some foreign object falling on a sheet before the printing plates press the design on the sheet. The result will depend on what stage the obstruction occurs, but normally there will be a blank spot on the note where the obstruction was.
When this note was printed at the Fort Worth western currency facility, it went through the first and second printings normally before something found its way onto the surface leaving behind a blank area of paper lacking the serial number and seals. Freshly graded Choice VF 35 by PCGS. A cool note to add to your error collection.

Thanks for the great write up this morning. Special thanks to photographer Gaby Velasquez for these excellent pictures. Link to article in bio.
In 1994, French photographer visited Dave's and photographed what would become 3 generations of owners as part of his visual exploration of American Jewry.
Dave (pictures in the leftside teller window) received a call from Brenner asking to photograph the shop with his family present. Dave agreed and on one February evening this picture was taken.
In 1981, Brenner began photographing Jewish communities around the world, exploring what it means to live and survive with a portable identity and how Jews adopted the traditions and manners of their home countries and yet remained part of the Jewish people. He spent 25 years chronicling the diaspora of the Jews across the world from Rome to New York, India to Yemen, Morocco to Ethiopia, Sarajevo to Samarkand.
Now, almost 30 years later, Alan Jinich from the Frederic Brenner Archive has reached out.
Official ‘Type A’ torch from the Mexico 1968 Summer Olympics, constructed of black aluminum and a wooden handle, measuring 20.5″ in length and 4″ at its widest point. The upper metal ring features a pattern of six doves and the metallic label at the bottom reads “Mexico” twice. The base of the handle bears an affixed label that features the logo of the Games and names the designer, Manuel Villazon. The metallic bands exhibit some rippling, and the metal components are somewhat loose from the wooden handle.
The torch relay recreated the route taken by Christopher Columbus to the New World, and began on August 23, 1968, in Olympia, Greece. It notably traveled through Columbus’s birthplace in Genoa, where he set sail from Palos in Spain, and the first land he reached in San Salvador. In all, there were 2,778 torchbearers on the 13,546 km route. Complete with its original box and matching paperwork.

El Paso Street was the city's first street, and it's the location of the oldest surviving commercial building in El Paso-the 1882 Montgomery Building.
The one-story structure has a false front to make it look taller, like many business buildings in frontier towns of the period. Originally the Montgomery Building housed a drugstore and a bookstore. Today, a well-known occupant is Dave's: A Pawn Shop, which has been family-owned since the 1940s, when it started as a military surplus store. Dave's received the Texas Treasures Business Award (TTBA) in 2022 from .
The award recognizes the state's well-established businesses and their exceptional historical contributions to communities across Texas.
There's still time to make a TTBA nomination
before the next quarterly deadline on May 1:

Trading cards of this high-flying, fire-breathing Pokémon is soaring to new price points.
A rare, first edition, holographic Charizard card from the 1999 Pokémon Base Set has just sold for $420,000 at auction — an all-time record for a base-set card of its kind, according to PWCC Marketplace, which recently sold the card during its March Premier Auction.
“This historic piece of art designed by celebrated artist Mitsuhiro Arita is easily the most recognizable Pokémon card ever made,” the collector card-trading platform wrote of the lauded Japanese illustrator.
“Pokémon is the world’s leading media brand and Charizard is the GOAT of that brand. It’s an asset that Pokémon and non-Pokémon collectors know of and want to own,” Jesse Craig, director of business development for PWCC, told CNN in a statement.
“This is a card where demand continues to outweigh supply,” Craig added.
The card has drawn increasingly competitive bids in recent years, including one sold for $336,000 earlier in March. In late 2020, a Charizard card of a similar variety sold for a total of $360,000, including a buyer’s premium.
Its hype was likely amplified earlier that year by retired rapper Logic, who notoriously laid down over $220,000 for another first edition Charizard card, while YouTuber and wannabe MMA fighter Logan Paul also reportedly shelled out $216,000 for a box of Pokémon Base Set cards.
And one of the highest-selling Charizard cards went last year for over $490,000.

The Israel Mint produced these medals for Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin of Israel to give to other heads of states or other dignitaries. This medal was actually given to someone by the late prime minister of Israel!
This version was in a key-ring setting. According to the Israel Mint site only 108 were minted in the bronze version with another 142 in the silver version.
"The Israel Government Coins and Medals Corporation had issued special medals for the Prime Ministers Golda Meir, Yitzhak Rabin and Menachem Begin. The medals were minted in limited quantities and intended to be awarded to Heads of State and other people of high distinction among the nations as a gift from the Prime Minister of Israel. Most of the medals were issued in the form of a key inside a ring - an opening at the top for a chain. Some were issued as regular medals."
This medal is something that Y. Rabin actually held in his hands. Hold it in your own hands at Dave's Loans A.K.A. Dave's A Pawn Shop.

The 1789 CAROLVS III variety 8 reale is somewhat scarce due to the transition to CAROLVS VI legend. Struck in Mexico between 1789 and 1790, this 8 reale is transitional between rulers Carolus III and Carolus IV. As such, it commands a premium from type collectors even though it is no rarer than other dates of the period. The regular issue (KM 106.2a) for 1789 is quite scarce. Assayer FM is recorded for the years 1783-1801. The dollar that George Washington allegedly threw over the Potomac could have been of this type.

A poison ring or pillbox ring is a type of ring with a container under the bezel or inside the bezel itself which could be used to hold poison or another substance; they became popular in Europe during the sixteenth century. The poison ring was used either to slip poison into an enemy's food or drink, or to facilitate the suicide of the wearer in order to preclude capture or torture.

We love vintage advertising. Back in 1956, Dave's was known as El Paso Exchange Post. We found an old ad and listing for the Exchange Post while thumbing through this Fort Bliss guidebook from that year. Back then our ads boasted "Highest loans on anything of value" and "Bargains out of pawn". 65 years later we still have the same phone number... Just a couple of digits longer now.
