How Speech Therapy Works
SLPs figure out what kind of language problem a student has. They determine what’s causing it and decide on the best treatment. At Speech Communication we help kids build skills by working with them one-on-one.
SLPs can help with:
Articulation problems: Not speaking clearly and making errors in sounds.
Fluency problems: Trouble with the flow of speech, such as stuttering.
SLPs can help treat:
Receptive language problems: Trouble understanding (receiving) language.
Expressive language problems: Trouble speaking (expressing) language.
Pragmatic language problems: Trouble using language in socially appropriate ways.
Prayers for all the families.

Language has to do with meanings, rather than sounds. A language disorder refers to an impaired ability to understand and/or use words in context. A child may have an expressive language disorder (difficulty in expressing ideas or needs), a receptive language disorder (difficulty in understanding what others are saying), or a mixed language disorder (which involves both).
Children with speech and/or language impairments typically display lower reading, mathematics, and behavioral functioning at both the start of kindergarten and throughout elementary school (Harrison, McLeod, Berthelsen, & Walker, 2009; McCormack, Harrison, McLeod, & McAllister, 2011; Morgan, Farkas, Hillemeier, & Maczuga, 2012).

Research suggests that the first 6 months of life are the most crucial to a child’s development of language skills. For a person to become fully competent in any language, exposure must begin as early as possible, preferably before school age. (NIDCD, 2015)
Children who have chronic ear infections are at risk of delayed language.
Parents! Always make sure that your child gets their hearing tested with their pediatrician or an ENT doctor.

False Fact 3: Sign Language Speeds Up Language Development
Sign Language is used by many parents as a way to communicate with a child before he or she is able to talk. It has been rumored to actually help babies and toddlers learn to talk faster than normal rates, by increasing vocabulary before he or she learns to speak the words. The truth? Using sign language does not translate to accelerated language acquisition for children.
28-60% of children with a speech and language deficit have a
sibling and/or parent who is also affected.
Make sure your child is producing these sounds at his/her age. If not call us at 915.598.6816 to make an appointment to schedule your child for a speech evaluation. Medicaid covers all services at 100%.
