Texas SB4 has sparked heated debates! 🚨 Passed in 2023, this law allows state police to arrest those suspected of illegally crossing from Mexico, with misdemeanors and felonies on the table. Critics argue it oversteps federal immigration control and could lead to racial profiling. Amid ongoing legal battles, its enforcement remains uncertain. Stay updated and informed on this critical issue.Learn more at Abara.org/SB4 #TexasSB4 #ImmigrationLaw #Abara #Abarahouse #ElPasoTX

Since we filmed this video, we are thankful to say that SB4 has been blocked by a federal judge and therefore is paused for the moment.

It's February!! here's what's current: a beautiful MLK Weekend event, Como Nacido Entre Nosotros conference for our Juárez Staff, art therapy, Border Encounters, and Advocacy training. We are also looking forward to co-hosting the CCDA Southwest gathering. Thank you for continuing to journey with us.

Happy New Year from Abara 🎊 + January Updates from our Shelter Support Team Supervisor, Meredith

An Invitation from Meredith
As we approach the last few days of 2023, our Shelter Support Team's Supervisor Meredith extends an invitation to partner with Abara. It’s an honor to continue walking together, as your partnership sustains this work, impacting countless children, families, and leaders.

"How do we bring people together who might think of themselves as enemies? To say no to violence, and yes to the mutual thriving of all those involved? Our heart at Abara, and within our community for the development of Abara House, is to develop a space to examine all of these issues, the root of people's fears: belonging, displacement..who belongs and who doesn't...we are constantly sitting in that space..." Listen to our Executive Director Sami share his heart in this special video to close 2023.

It's Christmas eve ✨ Listen to our director Sami describe the tradition of Las Posadas and it's significance related to offering hospitality to our neighbors. "Is there room? Is there room?"

Have you ever wondered what the word “abara” means? Abara means “river ford” in a variety of Semitic languages. The ford is a place where the river is shallow enough to cross walking. This is our heart: to move in humility across divides. This is the end of our giving day content. Thank you to those who have already given and to those considering! In solidarity, Team Abara #elpasogivingday

If you choose to donate to Abara, what kind of things do we use your donation for? What needs are being met? Listen to this short by our director Sami to find out. This story is shared with permission from the family. #elpasogivingday

As Karla shared, today we are hosting our friends at @dashnetwork for a border encounter! A few of them will join us on Instagram LIVE, sharing about their BE experience, during our power hour between 12 and 1 pm. We hope to see you there 🤞🏻

Rise and shine, it’s El Paso giving day!! We are so grateful for our community today, and excited to see how we come together around this work. #elpasogivingday

Have you ever wondered what the word “abara” means? Abara means “river ford” in a variety of Semitic languages—a natural place where a river is shallow enough to cross. We envision a space in which people can move in humility across divides. Tomorrow is El Paso Giving Day! Do you want in?

Wanna know who keeps the wheels on the bus here at Abara? Queen CJ. 👑 Your profound wisdom, experience, and grace makes us better. Thank you CJ for the work you do every day to further the mission of Abara!
