Last night was HUGE.

Months back, Kim Nicol, a longtime (and not to mention awesome) Champ Camp Mom reached out to ask if we’d be interested in hosting an event together. The event, which was later coined as ‘Slam City El Segundo,’ was slated to be a feel good kids skate contest to commemorate a local dad who tragically left this world far too soon. We obliged immediately, and the contest quickly took on a life of its own, turning out to blow expectations out of the water and become a trifecta of a first time event.

First and foremost, Slam City functioned as a container for a beautiful afternoon to celebrate the life and legacy of Scott Burton. With his daughter nailing her contest run, his son shredding on his scooter, and his wife and family there to witness it all, the event met its mark. But turns out, it didn’t stop there…

Slam City El Segundo also functioned as a display of the beauty of skateboarding and its olive-branch nature of bringing people together. No matter a person’s experience level, race, religion, political affiliation, etc., these silly boards cut through divides and unite communities! This ethos was palpable at Slam City El Segundo.

Lastly, thanks to Kim’s next level gumption and the incredible generosity of over a dozen sponsors, this event did another thing. Not only was enough money raised to put on the contest at zero out-of-pocket cost, but we had $1000 left over after the fact, which brings us to last night. At the generous request of the Burton family, all funds were donated to the City of El Segundo for future skatepark renovations. Win-Win-Win!

This is skateboarding. This is community. This is love. Thank you x 1000 to everyone that had a hand in making it happen — let’s run it back next year!

REMINDER: Next weekend, September 14th, 2024 [3-6pm], we kick off the first annual Slam City El Segundo! This laid back fun-filled Kids Skate Contest is designed to serve four purposes…

1️⃣ Pay homage to the late great Scott Burton, who was a pillar in El Segundo and a positive force in countless people’s lives

2️⃣ Host a no pressure skate competition that gives all levels the opportunity bravely dip their toes into friendly competition
