Big Spring F&AM Lodge 826 honors their Past Masters.

Alexander Kasey, who is buried at Kasey Cemetery, also known as Grandview Cemetery, has a reputation for being haunted and sometimes referred to as the Gates to Hell. The cemetery is located on Old Hardinsburg Rd, Elizabethtown, KY. It is situated in a remote area and has a history dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries The cemetery has suffered from vandalism over the years, with broken gravestones and scattered pieces. Kasey Cemetery is believed to be extremely paranormally active.

In researching the history of the Lodge, the burial spot of Alexander Kasey was discovered. Kasey was the Master of and re-established the Lodge in 1864, late in the Civil War. The cemetery is in poor condition and vandalism prompted a member of Masonic Lodge 826 to clean up the cemetery. Further research discovered that many Masons of the Lodge as well as many Civil War Soldiers are buried here. At the least, those who fought for our freedom in war deserve our respect and honor. The oldest burial found is that of Nancy Ross Kasey who was born on 26 Dec 1800 in Bedford County, Virginia, USA, and died on 19 Mar 1846 (aged 45) in Breckinridge County, Kentucky, USA.

All that are interred here will be honored. Our past masters, the, who were also brothers of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Woodmen and Civil War Soldiers, Union or Confederate. Big Spring F&AM Lodge 826 will be cleaning up and assessing the damage that may be repaired on Saturday 13 April 2024 at 9 AM. If you wish to help, you are welcome. Special honor will be given to:

Were there mosquitos in 1909? Well, I have proof they did! Proof it is a Louisville KY mosquito. In doing some historical research on the Odd Fellows in KY, I came across a book from Chosen Friends Lodge #2. In it, on page 196. Feb 16, 1909, we find a squashed mosquito! Now, let's ponder that a moment. I am the proud owner of a 114-year-old mosquito that possibly has DNA from IOOF secretary Erwin G Eberline!

What is it like to volunteer? A sense of pride and accomplishment? To know you did something to help someone or a cause. Here is a photo of our kitchen table. There is a box of 500 envelopes waiting to be stuffed with the 500 newsletters and of course the 500 stamps. There is also sacrifice to volunteering. In this case I took over my wifes table and we AINT gonna eat till I get this done.

Hello Brothers and Sisters! I am an Odd Fellow! And also, a Mason. A question was asked if the Odd Fellows are a branch of Masons. There are very similar in symbols and rituals. I found an interesting article at http://www.midnightfreemasons.org/2015/01/are-odd-fellows-part-of-freemasonry.html

As a Genealogist who likes to picnic at, and clean cemetery stones I just love this picture on the site listed above.

The Odd Fellows of Bowling Green, Kentucky Aeolian #51 Lodge had a Christmas party on 12/2/2022. The event was attended by the Deputy Grandmaster of Kentucky, George Brady, and widows of past Odd Fellow members. We had numerous friends and family members in attendance. Downs Syndrome of Southern Kentucky made a presentation about the events they are doing and their progress with individuals with special needs. Brother Jack Donelson presented a $1000 check from the Odd Fellows organization. We had excellent food and music when we give special thanks to John Renfrow and Stephen Stahl, who did excellent work in regard to this event. Thank you to everyone who attended and participated. I learned from the presentation that there are only three Buddy Houses in Kentucky. Bowling Green is very fortunate to have one of those organizations. Thank you!!!
In Friendship, Love and Truth.

KENTUCKY ODDFELLOWSHIP

History of Humboldt Lodge
1859-1909

Odd fellowship continued, for some years after its introduction in Baltimore, to practice
indulgence in "the mug and the pipe." When the Order reached the interior cities, that element
of the institution received its fatal shock, as the reformers of the East and of the West
were strong enough to stop the practice. The people of the West were mostly natives of the
soil, and they had never been accustomed to European habits, so when the Order was introduced in the West, the members were unable to appreciate any good in beer and the smoking of to***co, the latter, however, they were willing to chew. We were far from the East, and our people had practices revolting to the refined gentlemen of the great cities—such, for example, as excessive chewing of to***co—and on the other hand, the customs of the East, in the use of the "mug and the pipe," were not appreciated by our "quid" loving people.

Feeble as Kentucky was, it had an early influence in effecting the extermination of the "mug" from a proximity to the lodge-room. It is proper to state, however, that while complying with Article II of the Constitution of 1821, Grand Lodge of the United States, which reads: "No refreshments shall be allowed in the lodge-room during its sessions," yet it was an easy matter to adjourn for the time being.

The first meeting of Odd Fellows in this State transpired on December 10, 1832, in Louisville,
at Talmage's Hotel, on Wall, or Fourth street, between Main and the River. At this
preliminary there were present, Nathaniel Estlin, Sydney S. Lyons, Stevenson Waters, Thos.
H. Breese, Geo. G. Wright, Joseph Barclay, John J. Roach and Thos. Mayberry. Thos. Breese
was made chairman and Nathaniel Estlin secretary.

Thos. Wildey, then Grand Sire of the Order, was at Cincinnati, on a tour for organizing
lodges in the West and South. At a meeting held on December 13, Wildey was present, on which occasion he consented to grant a dispensation or charter, and then the officers were selected. He gave them the charge books, that they might prepare for work on his return from New Orleans, whither he was then going.

Wildey returned from New Orleans the latter part of January 1833, and on Monday, the
28th of January, he organized Boone Lodge No.1, and installed the following officers: Sidney
S. Lyon, Noble Grand; Stephen Barclay, Vice Grand; W. Sutcliffe, Treasurer; G. G. Wright,
Secretary, and John J. Roach, Corresponding Secretary.

On March 17, 1835, Chosen Friends Lodge was organized, by the good will of Boone Lodge,
the latter giving the use of their hall free of rent to the new lodge, and Chosen Friends was instituted by the officers of Boone Lodge: John Hawkins, Past Grand; Stephen Barclay, Noble Grand: Hy.(Henry) Wolford, Vice Grand; J. Y. Dashiell, Secretary. They installed the first officers of Chosen Friends: Harry Barker, Noble Grand; Chas. Wolford, Vice Grand; Sidney L. Lyon, Secretary, and A. W. R. Harris, Treasurer; the two latter were Past Grands from Boone. The charter was granted by the Grand Lodge of the United States, on the 18th of August, 1834, to
Sidney S. Lyon, Marshall Halvert, J. Y. Dashiell, James E. Shaw, A. Pringle, James Lyman,
H. Baker, A. W. R. Harris and Chas. Wolford.

On October 8, 1834, a charter was granted for the organization of Washington Lodge No.
3, at Covington, to petitioners Benjamin Moses, Geo. W. Morrel, Alfred Riley, John Maxwell,
John Calland, Horizon J. Poor, Peleg Kidd, Willis Payne, B. B. Evans, Caleb M. Kude, Charles
Huntsman, Edward A. Henry and John J. Roach. This lodge was organized on Wednesday, March
25, 1835.

On September 1, 1835, the Grand Lodge of the United States granted a charter to petitioners
Jos. Metcalfe, Henry Guibert, S. H. Drake, John Joyce, William Twyman, P. H. Conant, and J.
Y. Dashiell, of Louisville, to open Lorraine Lodge No. 4, which transpired on Wednesday,
the 7th of October 1835, when the following officers were installed: Joseph Metcalfe, Noble
Grand; William H. Granger, Vice Grand; John Joyce Secretary and William Twyman, Treasurer.
The lodge was opened and officers in stalled by Past Grands John Hawkins and Chas. Wolford,
of Boone Lodge.

At the session of September 1, 1835, the Grand Lodge of the United States granted a
charter for the Grand Lodge of the State of Kentucky, to the following petitioners: Past Grands
John J. Roach, John Hawkins, Stephen Barclay, Joseph Metcalfe, Joseph Barclay, Henry Wolford
and Thomas Devan, of Boone Lodge No. 1; Sidney S. Lyon, of Chosen friends No. 2; and
Benjamin Moses, of Washington No. 3; and on Saturday, the 12th of September 1835, the Grand Lodge was organized, and the following officers were elected and installed: William S. Wolford, of No. 2, Grand Master; A. W. R. Harris, of No. 2, Deputy Grand Master; Charles Q. Black, of No. 1, Grand Secretary; and Henry Wolford, of No. 1, Grand Treasurer.

Thus was formed, in 1835, the Grand Lodge of the State of Kentucky, and since then it has
had a career of peace and progress not excelled by that of any other State. Its officers generally
have been men of marked merit for integrity and perseverance.

At the time the Grand Lodge was organized the system of "harmony," that is, the flowing
mug and the fuming pipe, had not ceased to be practiced in some of the Eastern cities, in some
indirect manner, although the example never reached Kentucky. Those who composed the
Grand Lodge were men of worth, and the first officers were men of influence and energy.
In 1836, Henry Wolford was sent as representative to the Grand Lodge of the United
States. He was decidedly opposed to the "harmony" system; nor did he believe in the propriety
of holding lodge meetings in the same building in which a convenience was afforded for procuring malt productions.

For a long time Wildey kept a lodge-room in his own house, and after adjournment, or during
recess or a short leave of absence, the "harmony" was convenient. When the Grand Lodge was formed there were but fifteen members or Past Grands, and a membership of the Order in the State of about 170. We have now 330 lodges and a membership of 28,000.
At that time there were but ninety-six lodges in the United States and 6,743 members. At present 15,774 lodges and a membership of 1,396,319, as per report of July 1, 1908, of Sovereign Grand Lodge.
