I watched a shocking video the other day that said if you can't get up from down on the floor without aid or struggle, your life expectancy is predicted to be 10 years or less(!!). The message boiled down to loss of muscle mass and its correlation with a dramatic decline in health. As a health coach, this got my attention and really made me pause to listen!
The truth is one of the most striking effects of age is the involuntary loss of muscle mass, strength, and function. Muscle mass decreases approximately 3–8% per decade after the age of 30. This rate of decline is even higher after the age of 60 and is a fundamental cause of and contributor to disability in older people.
A decrease in muscle mass not only increases the risks of falls and vulnerability to injury but is also accompanied by a progressive increase in fat mass and is associated with an increased incidence of insulin resistance in the elderly. Furthermore, bone density decreases, joint stiffness increases, and there is a reduction in stature. All these changes have probable implications for several conditions, including type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and osteoporosis.*

We all know we need to get more active for heart health along with many other benefits, but what many don't realize is, that it's not just as simple as hitting the gym. What you put into your body while you're working out is just as critical to building healthy muscle (and not increasing muscle loss along the way). FOODS TO AVOID IF YOU SUFFER FROM ANXIETY
Super interesting information about the link between ANXIETY and NUTRITION
GLUTEN:
Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and some oats. According to Harvard Medical School,
“The brain has a direct effect on the stomach. For example, the very thought of eating can release the stomach’s juices before food gets there. This connection goes both ways. A troubled intestine can send signals to the brain, just as a troubled brain can send signals to the gut. Therefore, a person’s stomach or intestinal distress can be the cause or the product of anxiety, stress, or depression. That’s because the brain and the gastrointestinal (GI) system are intimately connected”
The Maryland Psychiatric Research Center at University of Maryland School of Medicine discovered that,
“Various types of anxiety are associated with gluten intolerance. One study found that CD patients were significantly more likely to have state anxiety when compared to controls, and that after 1 year on a gluten-free diet, there was a significant improvement in state anxiety symptoms [source]. Other anxiety disorders such as social phobia and panic disorder have been linked to gluten response. Addolorato and colleagues [source] reported that a significantly higher proportion of CD patients had social phobia compared to normal controls. Additionally, a higher lifetime prevalence of panic disorder has been found in CD patients and new studies have confirmed the increased association between CD and anxiety.”
SUGAR:
When sugar levels swing from high to low, your hormones, adrenaline and cortisol, are released, which can cause anxiety and panic
A 1985 study published in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology found that reducing sugar intake had a positive impact on emotions:
“… Subjects reported many symptoms and/or presented a distressed profile during baseline assessment. However, following a 2-wk dietary change symptoms declined, and the MMPI or POMS profiles reflected a more stable and less distressed individual."
VEGETABLE OIL (LIKE SOY)
These vegetable oils such as soy oil are genetically modified. Genetically modified soy contains a pesticide called Bacillus thuringiensis injected directly into the seed. It cannot be washed off. Continued consumption of a food product containing pesticides can cause permanent neurological damage that can cause the symptoms of mental disease.
GMOs can cause intestinal permeability, further damaging the gut. So that’s the first reason to avoid these oils.
These oils are dangerously low in omega-3 and extremely high in omega-6, which leads to inflammation of the body and brain.
When your omega-3 intake is inadequate, your nerve cells become stiff and more prone to inflammation as the missing omega-3 fats are substituted with cholesterol and omega-6 instead. Once your nerve cells become rigid and inflamed, proper neurotransmission from cell to cell and within cells become compromised.

Getting Out of Your Own Way: Stop Self-Sabotaging Self-sabotage is a common behavioral dysregulation that can be conscious or unconscious depending on the level of awareness.
Mother's Day is an important reminder for me of why I invested in myself to get healthy. My kids were a big part of my “why”.
Most of us moms don’t put ourselves first, or honestly even put our own needs in the lineup at all some days. That was me, for sure.
But what are you sacrificing by doing that? You’re sacrificing longevity and more years with your family. More than that, you’re sacrificing QUALITY years with your family.
I’m an older mom with young children. I NEED energy to keep up with them, and by feeling at the top of my game I can show up for them every day on a higher level. Feeling healthy and well allows me to be the best mom I know I’m capable of being.
For me, it was important to model healthy eating for my children, as well, and break the generational line of disordered habits passed down to me, and the downward spiral of health that can accompany that.
This Mothers Day I encourage you to put yourself first. Make yourself a priority. Everything else flows from that - flows from you at the center - and your family will thrive. ❤️🤗

Today coaching was setting the program aside and just being there for some clients who needed someone to make space for them.
Listening with empathy and understanding is sometimes what coaching looks like.
Today coaching was reminding a client to give themself grace and that they are human. Making a huge change in your health is not always easy. Expecting yourself to do better and expecting yourself to be perfect are two very different things. People forget. I remind them.
Today coaching was lifting up a client who was in a very dark place to remind her that she is capable, and powerful, and beautiful. I see in people what they don't always see in themselves. I show them.
Today coaching was stuffing my own feelings down (sadness, anger, frustration, panic) and creating an immediate action plan when a client, who'd been putting off starting the program for several months, reported they had a stroke. People take their health for granted. I pray for them to choose their health and stand ready to pour into them when they do.
Helping them get back up and KEEP MOVING FORWARD when they are in a low place is a really worthy way to spend my day.
Helping them become EMPOWERED by choosing to celebrate every, single win is a great feeling.
Helping them CHANGE their health and life for the better gives me purpose.
Helping them see that their health - physical, mental, and spiritual - should be the HIGHEST PRIORITY in their life because it's from here that everything else flows, is a crucial part of my life's work.
Helping them BELIEVE they can change their lives and then showing them how is what I do.
This is what being a Health Coach is. This is who I am.

I spoke with a beautiful woman today, a potential client, who was in a place of great pain and deep, wrenching sadness. She told me the story of who she was and what she wanted to change in her life.
Across the phone lines, I took her hands in mine and looked her in the eyes, and I told her MY story, which mirrored her own. She cried because she knew I could SEE HER clearly, and understood her pain more than words could say.
Then I told her where I am NOW, and the story of how I made it through to the other side. She cried because, for the first time in a long time, she had hope that things can get better.
Friends, it’s NEVER too late. You’re never too old. You CAN make your life better. You can BE better. I am here as a testimony, a breathing, living example, to show you it’s possible.
Getting healthier is so much more than the physical changes the world sees. Most of the work is inside yourself, deep in the shadows you tuck away from the world. You ARE capable and worthy of positive changes.
Sometimes you just need someone to walk that path beside you who knows the way. ❤️
