Weekly Penny Your Weekly Guide To Savings
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Taking time to recognize and be mindful of our mental well-being is always important, but it's especially crucial right now when everything is compounded by our current circumstances.
The basic definition of mental health, as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), is a state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.
This state of well-being is paramount to our ability to function and thrive in our individual life and our community life. And right now, it's especially difficult to balance.
What Should we be Especially Mindful of?
Many outlets that would normally help us to cope with stress are simply not available to us right now. It's important to pay attention to how you may be manifesting your reaction to stress in order to help lessen it's impact.
Are you eating or sleeping too much or too little?
Do you find yourself with little or no energy?
Has your consumption of alcohol, ni****ne or other drugs increased?
Do you find yourself withdrawing from social interactions?
If you've been able to pinpoint some ways that your mental well-being is being impacted, what are some things you can do to improve your mental health status?
Get professional help - work with a professional to help you develop coping skills.
Connect with others - get on the phone with friends and family or find an group on social media that shares as similar interest.
Help others - sometimes reaching out and helping other people in need can do even more to help yourself and boost your own mental well-being.
Get physically active - physical activity can go a long way to improve sleep and overall mental health.
Decrease your COVID-19 media consumption - While it's important to stay informed it's also critical to avoid over-saturation. Set boundaries on how much you'll allow yourself to watch and read.
Mental Health Resources
MentalHealth.gov - What are the basics, what to look for, how to talk about mental health, and how to get help.
World Health Organization - Fact sheets and other mental health resources. Specific resources related to mental health and COVID-19. You can also download a storybook (in multiple languages) to help children cope with COVID-19.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - Find resources for dealing with mental health issues. Resources for children and adults.
