📣🌷Attention all Wilder Park Conservatory visitors! We've noticed some rather "creative" uses of our beautiful plant beds lately, from impromptu picnics to mud pie making sessions to full on photography sessions. While we love seeing families and friends enjoying our space, we'd like to gently remind everyone that our plants prefer peaceful neighbors, not picnic pals. Here's why:

🌱Plant Trampling: Some of our green friends have been around for decades, and they've earned their space to stretch out their roots. Let's not make them feel like the dance floor at a rock concert.

🌱Mud Puddles: While our plants appreciate a good watering, they're not fans of muddy feet or impromptu soil excavations. Let's keep the dirt where it belongs – in the beds.

🌱Picnics and photos in Paradise: We know our Conservatory is a dreamy spot for a lunch date or photoshoot, but let's leave the sandwiches and snacks for the designated areas outside the Conservatory. Our plants prefer to be admired, not smothered.

Remember, we're all here to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of this historical gem. So, next time you visit, please respect our green residents and resist the urge to picnic with the plants!

Todays Throwback Thursday image is a view of the Elmhurst Public Library in the early 1930s, when it was located in the old Wilder Mansion. The library had been located in the mansion since 1922, shortly after the Wilder family sold their property to the newly-formed Elmhurst Park District. In 1936, the mansion would receive a facelift that would result in the facade we recognize today. The library moved from the mansion to its current location in 2003.

This week, for Women's History Month, we're highlighting some of the women who helped lead Elmhurst Park District and who made a significant impact on the Park District and Elmhurst community.

At an election held June 5, 1920, the Park District was organized under an act of the Illinois legislature. One of the members of the first Park Board was Gertrude Golden, who served for 17 years (1920-1937). During her tenure, the Park Board purchased and developed land for Wilder Park (conservatory, flower beds, tennis courts, playground, and bandstand), Salt Creek Park (picnic areas, playing fields, wading pool, playgrounds, and lawn tennis), and East End Park (swimming pool, play field, recreational field house, and tennis courts). The Board also purchased land for the future development of Butterfield Park.

Gertrude also served as the Garden Club’s first president for two terms. During her presidency, an active tree planting program was developed for Elmhurst with trees furnished at a nominal cost by the Club. She, along with two other women, also established an executive committee of Camp Fire Girls, which provided girls outdoor learning experiences already offered to boys. She mentored organizational leaders and helped build the organization, remaining active until her death in 1953. A tribute written in her honor said, “Throughout all her years of civic service, as she was content to let a child grow, so was she content to let a tree grow – for the future.”
