This article earned it's nomination as this study examined the use of intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) in predicting post-operative stroke and survival after cardiac surgeries. Patients were divided into groups based on the presence of post-operative stroke, and various risk factors were analyzed. Permanent EEG changes and diabetes were found to be significant predictors of stroke, while SEP changes were not. Patients with no IONM changes had better overall survival rates. The study discusses potential reasons for these findings and compares them to IONM use in other surgeries. Overall, the study is thorough and published in a reputable journal.

The nomination of this publication for "Outstanding Publication of the Year (2023)" is well-deserved due to its comprehensive retrospective analysis of glioma patients near eloquent brain structures. The paper stands out for its substantial sample size of 151 patients, a rarity for such procedures, and offers insights into the rate of postoperative motor deficits, as well as identifying potential risk factors for persistent motor deficits post-surgery. It examines three "triple-modalities": TceMEPs/dc-MEPs, bipolar Penfield technique for cortical mapping via an Ojemann stimulator, and monopolar subcortical mapping. The study meticulously documents each patient's lowest subcortical mapping threshold, any MEP changes, and the occurrence of ischemic events. Its practical value lies in its potential as a reference for mapping cases. The paper also highlights the phenomenon of "upstream" response loss with preserved subcortical responses, suggesting the need for further investigation. Additionally, it challenges the conventional "3 to 5 mA" standard during subcortical mapping as a predictor of positive outcomes, advocating for a more nuanced discussion within the field rather than a strict adherence to this guideline.

The American Society of Neurophysiological Monitoring (ASNM) Diversity Taskforce has been hard at work, with new data regarding inclusivity in the field of neuromonitoring.

The ASNM is concerned about potential underrepresentation within its membership and the intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) field. To address this, the ASNM established the Diversity Taskforce (DT) in 2021, with goals to foster inclusivity, empower members to share experiences, and identify barriers to participation.

They conducted an online survey among members to gauge perceptions of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within IONM.

Efforts are underway to engage underrepresented groups, including females, racial minorities, and the LGBTQ community, through targeted outreach and mentorship programs. The DT plans to use survey data to enhance educational activities and address barriers to participation for these groups.
