On February 27, 2017, I (Abbey) received the greatest gift possible- a heart transplant. We moved from TN to IL to seek care at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and within 6 months, I was waiting inpatient for a new heart. The reason? Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, a genetic disease that causes the heart muscle to thicken, making it harder for the heart to function properly.
I was diagnosed at the age of 34, never having had any known heart issues prior to that. No one in my family had ever had it or symptoms of it. Fast forward 7 years, and my youngest sister, Meri (you may know her as the cashier if you visited us in the first month of business at ATK--she was helping out!) needed a heart transplant for the exact same reason. Only 5% of people with this disease ever need a transplant, so I guess somehow we hit the lottery!
On January 29, 2024, Meri received the gift of life as well! (The really crazy part is we are 7 years apart, and transplanted at the exact same age-seven years apart!)
Why do I share all of this? Two reasons:
1) I am working on being more vulnerable in business posts, as both Tony and I desire for you to know us more than just another business in town. We are part of this community, and want to be for many years to come. We want to get to know you, and allow you to get to know us. Stop in and ask for us- say hello!!
2) You may have noticed a tip jar next to our register. I do not believe in tipping at quick service restaurants, but decided that if a customer wanted to tip, we would donate all tips monthly to the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association, an organization that has given both me and Meri SO much support during our health journey. Please know that if you choose to tip, it's going to a worthy cause that is near and dear to our hearts (pun intended) but tips are NOT expected.
The GREAT news is that I'm well and healthy, and work WAY more than 40 hours a week with lots of energy, and have never been back in the hospital since transplant over 7 years ago. My sister is also doing well...the first year is the toughest as far as recovery, but she is back at work, and getting healthier everyday.
Below is a pic of me, my mom, Meri, Tony and my dad; just a month after my sister's transplant, along with a picture from this past Saturday when we celebrated our friend Erica's 10 Year Anniversary of her heart transplant. We are so thankful to our donors, medical team, family and friends who have supported us so well.

FULL TRANSPARENCY POST: Do you support small business? I think most people say they do, but do you really? Yesterday, a Friday, which is normally a busier day for us, we had a total of FIFTEEN customers all day. We are doing absolutely everything possible to market our restaurant, but with this low of sales, we simply won't make it. I just don't understand it.
So, I say all of this to share our reality, and ask for your help:
-PLEASE support us regularly by ordering food- for here, takeout, call ahead at 630-934-6558, online at aunttinaskitchen.com or delivery through DoorDash or UberEats
-Spread the word to those you know- share your experience! We have GREAT reviews, just not enough customers
-Order catering from us- for Holidays, for corporate events, etc.
-Set up an Eat & Earn for a local school, church, non-profit, team, etc.
-Share any opportunities you may have for us to succeed--we are exploring school lunches through another company, pharma sales catering for medical reps, and more
I would hate to have to close our doors simply because we could not get enough local support. We chose Elmhurst and this location because we want to be part of this community, and bring more events and support to North Elmhurst, but we can't do it without YOU! Thank you for listening, and we are so thankful our customers and supporters.
