We are sharing some important words from Cary Lieberman, the executive director of Greenhill Humane Society.

Greenhill is a local institution that is important to us because they help keep our domestic animals and our community safe.

Our local government is considering deep cuts to their funding, and this will hurt animals. Please reach out if you feel inspired.

Since 1978, Eugene, Oregon has had a comprehensive animal welfare program in place that has helped to ensure the safety and well-being of both animals and people in the community. However, without your help all that will change.

The City of Eugene is considering a 42% overall budgetary cut to their animal welfare program including a 57% cut to the contract that they hold with Greenhill for animal sheltering. The cuts would eliminate one animal welfare officer and reduce field coverage from seven days a week down to four. Additionally, it would result in over 700 City of Eugene animals without safe shelter annually.

If these funding cuts are passed, it will have a devastating impact on the safety and welfare of both animals and people in the Eugene community. Hundreds of stray dogs and cats will be roaming the streets. Many of these animals will be hit by cars; some will attack other animals or people.

It is not too late for the City of Eugene to reverse course. We are asking Eugene residents to voice their concerns at the Eugene City Council Meeting tomorrow (Monday). There are also other opportunities to contact your Representatives. Please don’t miss these opportunities to let your voice and concerns be heard.

We know that you love your pets and want to live in a community where they can be safe. Please urge your City of Eugene representatives to adequately fund the City’s animal welfare program and prevent these cuts from happening. The safety and well-being of the Eugene community depends on it.

Some of you may know about this already. Friday we lost one of our small family.
Midas had worked for Viva! for about 3.5 years and recently he finished up his culinary arts degree and was about to open his own food cart, ‘Curry Up!’.

We are still quite shaken up by this tragic and unexpected news of loss. This special human will be missed.

We’ll be closed Monday & Tuesday this week.
