Last but not least, our final Senior Spotlight is on Emmanuel Hernandez, a comparative literature major from Chicago, IL!

Despite being known by many as the most nonchalant member of NU Crew, Manny is one of the most passionate and dedicated rowers you’ll meet. He says that if crew taught him anything it’s the selflessness and resilience needed to pursue a long term goal on a team, and he’s demonstrated that showing up to practice, rowing hard and elevating any boat he was in, all without boasts or complaints. Manny said the most rewarding part of his 4 years was watching the team grow: “Seeing how far the team has gotten over the past few years is incredible. Not just the size of the team but it’s competitive nature and team focus. I see special things on its way for NU Crew!”

We’ll miss you and your quiet intensity Manny, best of luck and stay nonchalant!

Our next Senior Spotlight is Connor Cassedy, a Data Science Graduate Student, from Orange County, CA.

When asked how his teammates would describe him Connor chose one word: “old.” While Connor may have been around before the inception of the 8 oar shell, he possessed a wisdom unique to those old enough to have witnessed to the agricultural revolution. Connor had some of the nastiest oar bends we’ve ever seen, and be it through his humor or austerity, his words always helped to liven boat morale, especially after some tough rows. Despite only joining the team this year, Connor worked hard in the winter months and quickly climbed up the ranks, winning races with the 2v and rowing his favorite seat, 3 seat, in the V8 at Acra.

We’ll miss your maturity, dedication and all around awesomeness Connor, best of luck!

A quick break from our alumni spotlights to shoutout our rowers who raced at Chicago Sprints this weekend!

Adam DiPasquale and Benjamin Spinrad placed first in their heat in the pair, and Lizzie Dozois and Ann Slivken won their heat in the 4+ along with recent grads Lucy Joseph, Kelsey Carroll and Jackie Carroll.
We love to see our rowers getting at it this off season!

Our next senior spotlight is Kelsey Carroll, a journalism and art history major from Lucas, TX.

Kelsey Carrol has been with the team since her freshman year, where she immediately became involved with the team. She’s been one of our most involved exec members which made some of our biggest boat purchases possible. On her biggest accomplishment, Kelsey said “My biggest accomplishment with the team was winning 3rd at ACRA with the Women’s 8+ this past May. I had a pretty uninspiring winter erg season that had left me in the dumps going into spring break, and I really had no idea how the spring was going to pan out. I took all the corrections I was given on the erg and showed up each day on the water, determined to make improvements. I’m so proud of the strides I made in less than 10 weeks that put me, and the entire 8+, in a place to succeed at ACRA and we killed it!”

We’ll miss our “quiet assassin,” best of luck Kelsey!

Our next Senior Spotlight is Anna Krausse, a Biological Sciences and Global Health Studies Major from Portland, Oregon.

Anna’s best memories with the team are coxing at Head of The Charles last year and winning gold at ICRI with the Men’s 2V8+ this past year. She said the most rewarding part of NU Crew has been “the people (duh!). It’s been super awesome to see novices join the team and fall in love with the people and the sport. Especially see novice coxswains grow and gain experience is really rewarding and makes me happy for the future of the team.”

We’ll miss hearing you call “hunt them down!” Best of luck with the med school grind, you’ll do great things Anna!

Photos from Northwestern University Crew's post 06/24/2024

Our next senior spotlight is Ty Lennon, a sociology and international studies major from Fairfax, VA and last year’s team president.

Ty’s been rowing since high school, but only joined NU Crew after realizing how much he missed it during the pandemic. No matter how his erg pieces go, Ty’s always been there to support his teammates and pushed them to be all that bit faster on the erg. Ty said the most rewarding part of crew has been getting to be part of building the team back from the pandemic, he said “It’s been really exciting seeing guys with a lot of potential come into the team and really get hooked. I love rowing, and it’s so much fun seeing other people start to love it too.”

We’ll miss your passion for the sport, and all the ways you’ve found to support the team Ty, best of luck in all your pursuits on and off the water!

Photos from Northwestern University Crew's post 06/17/2024

Our next senior spotlight is Lucy Joseph, a Learning and Organizational Change from Concord, MA.

Lucy’s first impression of NU Crew was: “A bunch of weirdos but just the right brand of weird that I fit right in.” Self proclaimed “2V demon,” her biggest accomplishment came this year, coming off an injury her junior year, she surprised herself with how fast she could get and how much she was able to push the rest of her teammates on and off the water.

We’re gonna miss all of your awesome antics Lucy, best of luck, and make sure to keep that fun energy with you wherever you go!

Photos from Northwestern University Crew's post 06/10/2024

Our next senior spotlight is Andres Martell a Computer Science and Cognitive Science major from Orinda, CA.

Andres originally joined the team to find a new community and a routine to stay and shape, but fell in love with the sport and the excitement of crushing his goals on the erg and on the water. Andres said the most rewarding part of Crew was “Seeing parts of myself in some of the younger guys, and trying to set an example for how to succeed on the team both on and off the water, and pass forward the advice that I received when I started.” That’s no lie, Andres is a pleasure to have in your boat, and was the heart and soul of the 2V from bow.

We’ll miss rowing with you, and best of luck with your adventures in the Bay Area this summer Andres!

Starting off our senior spotlights with a bang is Jackie Carroll, a Radio/TV/Film major from Lucas, TX. This year Jackie was Northwestern’s first ever ACRA First Team All-American Athlete, 1 of 8 in the country!

One of Jackie’s biggest accomplishments on the team were surprising herself with how fast she could get this winter, and having her stroke become second nature. On her first impression of the team, Jackie said: “Everyone was really dedicated and weird enough to wake up to erg at 6am everyday. They were definitely some of the most persistent and committed athletes I’d ever met. I knew nothing about the sport, but the team’s excitement about rowing made me confident that I was in for something great when my first day at the boathouse came around.”

It’s been a pleasure to row with you Jackie and best of luck in the movie world, we’ll miss you in bow pair!

And that’s a wrap on the 2024-2025 season!

We made some huge steps for the program this year, from running 2MV8s for the first time, to our Novice Women making grand finals, and MOST IMPORTANTLY our WV8+ winning the program’s first ever Bronze Medal in the Varsity 8 category!

Thanks to all the parents, alumni and our coaches for all your support! Without them our rowers wouldn’t be able to throw down like we did!

This past weekend, we came together to honor Eviatar Frankel, former NU Crew Captain and Class of 2006 alumni in a boat naming ceremony.

Through his 4 years on the team, Eviatar left a lasting impact as a friend and leader. In honor of his life, his friends gathered to share their stories, helped fund the team’s new Men’s V8+, and as is only right, took it out for a row!

Thank you to all the alumni and rowers who came to celebrate Eviatar’s life, and most of all thank you to Eviatar for his enduring impact to the team.
