Mariah Robertson with Grace Deveney

Dear friends,

We are thrilled to host an artist talk and book signing with NYC artist Mariah Robertson and Grace Deveney, Art Institute Associate Curator of Photography and Media. Mariah's new Book of Details launched in April during the NY Art Book Fair. This gorgeous new book catalogues her decade plus career of experimentation with the photographic process.

Mariah's Art 21 episode and bio describes her as "a photographer often working without a camera, Robertson creates images through ceaseless darkroom experimentation.Through this open approach, a roll of metallic film accidentally exposed in her studio led to a series of large-scale works. Without knowing exactly what outcomes her hand-applied color chemicals will cause, she balances this lack of control with her mastery of the material. Her willingness to push the boundaries of photography allows her a freedom not often found within the field."

Two of Mariah's pieces were recently acquired by the Art Institute of Chicago and is currently on view in gallery 189, just off Griffin Court in the Modern Wing. Grace Deveney worked with Mariah to acquire these works to the AIC permanent collection. Grace will lead an interview with Mariah to discuss her art philosophy, process and practice from 2-3pm followed by a reception and book signing from 3-4pm.

I love my kids and family and yet motherhood has been (and continues to be) a complicated role. Growing up, I felt my mom’s unhappiness and didn’t understand it. For a long time, I was scared of becoming a mother because I thought I would be unhappy. I’m growing into it still and my role as a mother continues to evolve. I’m learning I can’t possibly be everything everywhere all at once, even if I try. Happy Mother’s Day to every mother and mother figure! And thanks to all the people in my life who’ve helped make this role possible❤️

We think about this question everyday: How sustainable is our home and lifestyle?
We consider how renewable, durable, and reusable each item is before we even think about recycling. Well made products using natural materials and processes have a better chance of being circular. They have a longer lifespan in its use and can be broken down and decompose with less energy and time than synthetic and plastic materials.
We do our part by sourcing products that are sustainable in their practice. For example, all of our teak kitchenware are made with remnants from the furniture industry. Maximizing the use of raw natural materials reduces waste of a precious resource. Most of our products are made with natural and renewable materials. We can count on one hand the number of plastic products we carry and most of those are with recycled plastic. Knowing that this industry requires a lot of packaging and protective material for shipping, we reuse a big portion of what we receive from our vendors.
We take sustainability seriously. It takes more time, energy, and thought to run a business this way. We are constantly looking for ways to do better. We have one earth to live on so let’s treat everyday as Earth Day!

Thanksgiving 2020 was an especially meaningful one. Having landed in Evanston after a decade abroad in the middle of a global pandemic meant celebrating in an almost empty apartment and making do with what we had. Thank you all for the kindness, love and grace these past few years as we found footing in this lovely community! Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined how this experience would set the next chapter of my life as a small business owner.
