Why Do the Living Grow?
written by Julie Moy, Class of 2024
for the dedication of the Community Garden at UCM
Why do the living grow?
Do cells divide so more cells
can divide again? When the fetus
moves, we celebrate.
But we don’t really need petri dishes
or ultrasounds to see growth –
just look at the floor
beneath our feet. There is green
between our toes and falling away
from the trees
preparing for a new season.
Even the hairdresser
will tell you just how much
a person can grow.
The tomatoes and the swiss chard,
they didn’t look like this
when their feet first hit
the dirt
four months ago.
To be alive and to live here
on Earth
is to grow and grow
so that the telomeres in our cells
can’t replicate,
so that the fetus kicks the amniotic sac,
so that my mom schedules a haircut for me,
so that we can pick tomatoes
off these vines.
We grow so we can live – so let’s
grow this garden
into life.
