Today, we remember William “Doc” Standring, founder of Sonitrol of Evansville, who passed away nine years ago, on May 15th.
When interviewed in 2014 about the early days of his Sonitrol franchise, Doc shared, “We sold a low-end grocery chain. The guy already had an alarm system and our competition told him, ‘This’ll never work.’ He said, ‘Well, you’ve never caught anybody, so let me give this a try.’ The first week, we caught two in one store, one in another, and three in another. The police then started to take notice. They started asking questions and actually referred us to several customers.”
Doc loved telling stories about Sonitrol alarms helping police catch intruders. When he wasn’t working full-time as a dentist, Doc helped run Sonitrol, he devoted hours to the Hadi Shrine Circus and other organizations, he spent time with his family, friends, and most of all, he told jokes to everyone he met and brought smiles to the world around him. We sure miss you, Doc! Thank you for bringing Sonitrol to our Tri-State community!
We love that he still has a Sonitrol knife from an apprehension he made!

Our Story
The company known today for detecting burglars had its roots in pest control of a different sort in the late 1950s.
Robert Baxter, of Anderson, Indiana, installed microphones within the walls of a building to listen for termites and pinpoint their location. Baxter invented other sound-related devices, too. On June 16, 1960, he incorporated “Sonitrol”, from the words sound and control, to manufacture and market his innovations.
Law Enforcement Legacy:
In 1963, Baxter met Al Cronk, a local police officer who owned an alarm company. Cronk was frustrated with systems that seemed to let the perpetrators get away. He hired Baxter, the inventor, to develop new ideas for the alarm company. Baxter responded with the audio sensor, and Sonitrol was born as a security company.
In 1969, Dr. William Standring opened Sonitrol of Evansville to help police reduce false alarms and increase criminal apprehensions. We’ve been securing the community in our Tri-State area ever since and recently celebrated our 50th Anniversary. We provide a full family of security services for schools, small to large businesses, as well as homes, including verified audio detection, SonaVision (video monitoring), cameras, DVRs, U.L. Fire Systems, and Access Control (keyless entry).
Today, Sonitrol provides tailored local business and home security service in approximately 180 cities throughout the United States and Canada. Now the third largest commercial security company in North America, Sonitrol is the clear leader in verified electronic security.
