Yesterday's chicken move Part 2. Everyone settled in, happy, warm, and some a little sleepy π΄
Last night's blizzard was brutal, but we got out for four water line checks for the yard water line (one of two house lines ended up freezing) and bird checks. So grateful the new coop arrived on time AND for Bob and Cooper's help getting all the birds moved and situated ahead of the worst part of the storm.
Yesterday's chicken move Part 1. We started after I got off work at midday, but not in time for the rains (and eventually snow) to already start. A huge thanks to Cooper for stepping in to move the bigs. Apparently he's a chicken whisperer, too π€
I've hoof tracked no less than 3 foot from the back fence so I was sooo excited to unexpectedly catch these beauties on film a few weeks back π. Was so caught off guard of course it was the one time I walked outside without my phone π€¦ββοΈ, but they waited for me and chilled for a good 3-4 minutes before meandering off π. Our little menagerie makes my heart sooo happy out on the farm!
This is your sign to stop dreaming and start doing! A year ago we'd watched one too many episodes of Yellowstone, and a spark of a conversation had just stared with us and JoElle about a crazy idea about buying land together. Never in a million years did I think going in on land would mean starting a small flower farm, diving into a more sustainable lifestyle, and choosing chickens as my entry livestock of choice π€£, but here we are. The work is honest, hard, and fun, and the prospect of a life well lived is motivation enough to be less talk and more do! How about YOU? What are YOUR dreams and goals in the coming year?
I love our menagerie of wildlife down on the farm! Always something new and intriguing!!!
Just watching this makes me cold! Still can't believe Coop took a "polar plunge" a few weeks ago. Just trying to brace myself for the blizzard making its way our direction tonight! Anyone else already ready for spring?
Our flock grew by 5 in the last 2 days, and preparations are being made for Winter Storm Elliott as we quickly acclimated the birds and loaded in our new chicken coop (which got stuck in the mud yesterday). Very excited to get our very first egg last night from the new girls, and working hard to get everyone accustomed to each other before we have to pen them up securely when the storms hit later today βοΈπ¨π§
I have actively been collecting seeds from various farm plants. However if you have extra seeds that you want to pass on, I would love to experiment with them for my 2023 growing season. So far I have been gifted Mexican Sunflowers as well as two varieties of poppies. Spring can't get here soon enough!!! Can we just totally bypass winter π?!?
Revival Farms River Valley is now a certified a Bee Friendly Farm!!! With special thanks to the big guy for supporting my bee keeping, always being on hand to help move hives, mow and trim around them, and help me with quick get aways if they get ornery. I am so excited for this designation for the farm and for our family! There is always something new to learn with beekeeping, and I am so thrilled to continue this endeavor at the farm! "Dear Nikki Davis: On behalf of the Board of Directors, scientists, staff, and educators of Pollinator Partnership, I am delighted to congratulate you on your acceptance into the Bee Friendly Farming (BFF) program." I have been wanting this certification since we bought the property, and I am over the moon excited that we met the criteria!!! Woot! Woot!
Just some of our fall pollinators on property ππ¦
We have come SO FAR on the studio in the last month. Kudos to Bob and his crew for all of their hard work! Finger crossed π€π€π€, this weekend might = move in!!! CANNOT WAIT!!!
Have had so much fun this fall experimenting with recipes with our home grown veggies!
Dropping a quick sneak peek of my new logo for art and products created on the farm! Our property has a rugged beauty that I tried to incorporate into the name and branding. More details and info coming soon once we can get moved in and settled!
I am so excited to share that as a result of a suggestion from my post from MON night (thank you Brandi Davis), I have joined https://sharewaste.com/ as a host!!! ShareWaste connects people who wish to recycle their food scraps and other organics with their neighbors who are already composting, worm-farming or keep farm animals. Now YOU can divert organic material from the landfill! Just LMK if you'd like to join the movement of composting and sustainable practices by collabing with me! "[Composting] prevents reusable food waste from contributing to landfills and producing greenhouse gases β though this waste emits methane when buried in a landfill, no methane is produced during composting. Instead, composting produces carbon dioxide. Because of this, composting is an environmentally friendly way to get rid of your food waste and put it to good use by producing more plants."
We will be accepting:
π±Peels of all uncooked vegetables and fruits
π±Teabags, tea leaves, and coffee grounds
π±Egg shells
π±Dead flowers, dead leaves, and lawn mowings
π±Shredded newspaper
π±Straw
π±Sawdust from untreated wood
Did you know that I was first inspired to compost because of my Grandma and Grandpa Warner? One of my craziest memories of her as a kid was grandma saving egg shells for the garden. In hindsight I realize what it was for as the two of them had the best soil and heaps of worms for fishing!!! Grandpa's worm boxes were the coolest πͺ±πͺ±πͺ±
Attention local restaurant owners and Facebook friends! Want to learn more about how YOU can compost? Check out this great article: https://www.bhg.com/gardening/yard/compost/how-to-compost Want to make a difference and keep and keep organic waste from contributing to landfills? Let me know! I'd love your compost materials! Details forthcoming on some exciting news!!!! This girl grows worms and is looking for ways to add more (in particular green) materials to her piles, and compost is the perfect way to improve our soil for next spring! You can help! See the list of waste items that I would be accepting. Saw a program like this on TikTok, and I would love to try something on a small scale to work out feasibility and growth opportunity!
My tiny but mighty pollinators are just so adorable yet do such important things ππ
Obsessed with the monarchs passing through this season πππ¦. Having fun learning more about how we can accommodate them better next year!
Last night's happy harvest π
